I am sure that is what I am going to have to do when I get my new engine. Do you have a picture showing how you did this?

Following Fred's path in my opinion will probably get you in trouble in the long run. Call your states DMV, they will probably install a VIN tag on the door jamb. Just be sure to do it before you remove the engine with the serial number that matches the paperwork.

Fred the Oregon State Police (OSP) will issue a tag and put it in your door jam. I'm not sure they even charge for it. I went over to the OSP office and requested it. I was told to go to the DMV and they will make the appointment for me.
They even offered me the Troopers phone number as I protested going to the DMV to do what we could do at the OSP office.

Once you are tagged the engine et.al doesn't matter.

You might consider lifting the body and removing the LH splash apron before the inspection to avoid any surprises. Good to know what they are going to find at the inspection!! Henry said history is bunk.

The number is stamped on the floor rail on the drivers side of my '31 SW town sedan.
That may be a good place to "re-stamp" your number.
Just pull back the carpeting to show them.
Hint: make it look aged

I am just trying to avoid having to pull the body off. The last thing I want to have is have issues with stubborn bolts and finally et it off to find that the number on there still doesn't match.

Yes maybe I should have had the DMV put a tag on the door jam of my coupe. They did do that on my huckster when I got it registered. But the huckster was a "build" from an old CCPU.

If I have to, guess I could haul the old engine in with the rig and show them both. But on the other hand, if I keep the coupe long enough, then I can let my kids worry about getting a "certified" title.

Good news guys! Turns out the original VIN is on the spare motor. I will have to figure out if a picture of if is sufficient for the DMV or what, but problem solved (theoretically). Thanks for the help guys. I'll update when I get it registered.

I pressed a piece of white paper into the number, then used a pencil to make a pencil etching of the number. This satisfied the DMV in my state. I took a picture as well just to be safe.

Thanks Tom. I will call the dmv today and ask if that will work. The etching might be a good way to prove I actually have the engine in my possession.

Couldn't you just use a flappy sander on you're angle grinder to grind off the wrong number, restamp the correct number on the engine, and repaint the area Ford green?

I suppose I could. I should be fine now since I have the engine with the correct VIN.

I have a 31 RPU in California...just finished with DMV and highway patrol. I ended up "lifting the body enough to access the frame #. Mine was rusted away too far to reuse. The highway patrol officer added a Reg. number tag on the frame crossover just behind the battery for easy future access. can't be seen without removing the battery access floorboard plate.

Illegal, but it's done all the time.

I would personally want to know what the frame s/n is on any vehicle I own, or want to own.
Eventually I believe all problems have to be faced.
But, evidentlly I am unique.
