Default Mystery Car

We found this picture in the attic. Any idea what year and model of the car? We are trying to date the picture.

Thanks
Tom

With wheels and body lines like that, I would bet mid to late 20s. I have no idea the make.

You could try sending the picture to Hemmings under Lost & Found in Hemmings Classic Car magazine. Here's the email:

[email protected]

I too am interested in its make and model. My initial guess, and that's a stab in the dark is a Dodge. Please respond when it is identified.

Lookit the odd rear wheels. The last time I saw something like that was on a WWI Lohner electric road engine. I'll take a wild guess that it is an Owen-Magnetic.

Hard to tell but are the front wheels wood spoked and rears steel and is that a drum brake? Also looking at the radiator and headlamp is this car from the end of the brass era? Perhaps the car was cobbled together to keep it going in that era. Note the happy faces of the occupants, particularly the child in the rear seat. Fascinating bit of history.

Look at the radiator of this 1920 Paterson. They were made for only
a few years in Flint, Mi.
Maybe not this year Paterson, but can anyone find other Paterson pics.

Ok Lanny, I change from buick to Paterson. Look at just above the running board. On the buick is chrome pieces which don't match the OP picture. The Paterson looks like the same detail as OP picture.

As well as head height from door panel top edge to roof top. Looks closer on paterson compared to buick.

Also take note of the window post that is present just in front of little girl on OP picture. This is absent on the buick but present on the Paterson.

Just counted the louvers on the hood. Close as I can tell 21 louvers on OP. 24 on the Buick??? Otherwise very close in appearance. Paid close attention to the rearward angle of the lower rear top, at the childs head in the OP. Appears identical. Other opinions?

Note the front bumper. I have one nearly identical. After doing research I discovered they were dealer supplied options in that era. I found similar and identical bumpers on Lincoln and Nash cars from the mid to late '20's. Further research may reveal more.

I don't believe that any of the brands mentioned above have windscreen stanchions as in the original picture.
My initial thought was Durant, but nah....

The mystery car has some slight differences to the '25 Buick pictures. The mystery car doesn't appear to have front brakes, The mystery car has 21 hood louvers vs 24 on the Buick, The windshield stanchions on the mystery car are bolted to the side of the cowl while the Buick sits atop the cowl. The cowl top extends rearward from the windshield on the mystery car while it appears to stop at the windshield on the Buick. It might still be a Buick, but a slightly different year or model.

Looking at this old touring car I see a very wide radiator that I think may be a brass type. I also do not see front brakes on the car. The headlamps also look like the early style brass lamps. Can't say what the make is, but I think that car is 1916 or earlier.

That big radiator reminds me of some of the post WWI Stanley Steamer cars but not all the characteristics are there. It does have a big radiator though. On a Stanley is would be a condenser. There were a lot of manufacturers that came and went in the early years before the depression.

Notice how close the fenders are to the tires on the mystery car? I wonder if the right side fenders are that close?

how about Hupmobile? In the Minnesota Street Rod Association "Linechaser" that I received in the mail today, in the "Did you Know" column there is a picture (drawing) of a Hupmobile that is similar--not the same. The hood is longer and the roof support rods are angled forward, but the line of the roof and rear pillar are the same. Couldn't find many pics of Hupmobile on the net. Regards. Rod

Rod, the picture in this months Linechaser of the '22 Hup has
the 6 cyl engine with the longer hood.

Here are pics of a 1919 and a 1924 Hupmobile, and the
Hups do have a lot of similarities to the OP's mystery car.

Graeme's AMCO car in post # 35 looks close, too.

the tell tale signs of the mystery car are #1 the hood has no round edge, looks like it was made in a brake=sharp corners, and the radiator matches that. #2 the windshield has no conventional stantions, instead the main frame bolts straight to the cowl. drum headlights were in vogue in the mid 20's, and front brakes were not common until the mid 20's. i could swear i have seen that hood shape before, but...its a vacant spot in my memory

The original person that posted this was just looking to date the picture, more than knowing what the make was. Should be enough info for him to guess within a year or two. I would say early to mid 20's is a good guess.

The top and hub caps and front brakes look better but the cowl to door and hood and radiator are different
