Default 1935 radio wiring

I've recently acquired a nice '35 Phaeton; this is my first posting, i.e. a question about the radio. Off the right side of the radio there are 4 wires: 1 goes to the head controlling the on/off; the 2nd goes to the head controlling the station selection knob; the third I suspect is the power cord. The 4th is a thin wire for the light bulb behind the head. Back to the suspected power cord: it's about 6" and comes out of the right side (in line with the on/off and station selector cables) and ends with a sort of female cup maybe 1/4" deep. I see no way this end connects to anything (hanging off the resister or from the battery)although I would suspect there should be a male counter-part about 4" long which connects to the resister on the fire-wall, possibly a snap on/off arrangement. I've checked about 5 parts catalogues, no clue. So, does the power cord come off the Right side, and how does it connect and to what?

some the on--off switch was in the head, some in the radio box

I just got a 36 open car radio with all the original wiring---although it is naked, the 35 radios I would have to look at, one is open car, other closed car, eventhough the cases look the same (other than for the speaker one uses the switch in the head, other in the box

the power wire goes through the speaker to make the speaker magnet on it's way to the radio innards

On the open car radio the power wire goes through a metal fuse holder the other side of the fuse holder goes to the power wire that powers the fuse for the headlights not on the resistor. You may be missing half of the metal fuse holder and the wire to the fuse block.

Ron, Here are a few images that should help you identify the wires and cables going into the right side of your 35 radio. Hope they help. The power wire has a bayonet style fuse connector. You are missing the female side that hold the fuse with the other end terminating at the firewall fuse block.

Do you have the rest of the fuse holder? If not contact Narragansett reproductions
401-364-3839 [email protected] They may also have the connector for the antenna cable.

Thanks, Terry. I've just sent an email to Narragansett describing the problem and your suggestion. Thanks for the prompt reply and potential lead. Ron (in Northern Calif)

Thanks Don for the prompt reply and pic. Your reply confirms Terry's reply: I'm missing the rest of a fuse holder line so I've emailed Narraganset to see if they have this part. I'm very impressed and grateful to this Forum and the prompt replies. Hope one day I will know enough to contribute some responses. Ron Grassi (Northern Calif.)

Ron, Here are 2 more photos showing the complete radio wire with fuse holder and loop terminal as well as a detail of several size fuse holders(2 different size fuses)

Hope this helps

Don

PS I have an extra large fuse holder if you want to use that.

Don: Now I get it. I have the wire coming from the box including the left side of the wire with a sort of female holder or adapter that goes into a missing fuse container that has about 8" more of wire after the fuse container and which goes to the firewall fuse block. If the fuse holder you have matches (i.e. goes in snugly to what I have) then absolutely yes, I'd appreciate your spare fuse holder (unless it's a generic and I can order it through one of the parts houses). Please set a price. If it ultimately doesn't fit, I'll promptly return it. Thanks, Ron

Thanks again Don. So your diagram shows the power wire going to the fuse block and coil resister. Understood. I've also heard running the wire to the ignition hot side is a way to go, and to use a relay if you go that route. Which makes more sense to you? Ron

Ron, Run the radio wire to the left side of the fuse as shown in attached photo. Attaching the wire to the right side of the resistor would be OK as well. Since the voltage drops accross the resistor, never attach the radio to the right side of the resistor.

Regards.

Don,

Don't you mean "never attach the radio to the left side of the resistor" in your last sentence?

The right side is fused and is used for lighting only. The left side is non-fused and is where everything other than lighting connects. Believe the radio lead has it's own decated inline fuse.

Note: also see my comment in #17 below.

OK, OK, I was mixing up "resistor" and "fuse" in my brain!!!!!

Some days!!!!!

Note: Removed my original (and totally confused!!!!) comment.
