29 Phaeton "fatman" conversion; finally more room!
Finished the steering wheel conversion to allow for more room and comfort for a big guy (6'1" 230#)
Removed original 17" steering wheel and replaced with a flat dish 14" steering wheel. Removed center hub from an old donor wheel, attached it to new flat dish wheel with the center hole drilled to 1" to accommodate the 15/16" nut. Attach the hub to the new wheel using 5mm button top hex bolts and nyla nut with Loctite (Fastenal products) Original dimensions were: bottom of wheel to top of bottom seat - 6" - NEW = 8" bottom of wheel to front of back seat 10.5" - NEW = 15.5" with the possibility of an additional 3" when the old spring back is replaced with a high density foam pad. The 14" wheel is not a problem steering as I have a Randy Gross F-100 steering box and a shortened (1.5") Pitman arm (Mikes $40) The whole conversion cost less than $200 including donor wheel, new 14" flat dish aluminum wheel, shortened Pitman arm and powder coating new wheel. Everything works great and now I can comfortably drive the Phaeton, and get in and out with out being a contortionist! THANKS DEAN!!! |
