Default Dustless Blasting

I decided to do onsite dustless blasting for a bunch of my truck parts. I think it turned out well. Didn't have to drop parts off somewhere for a week or pick them up. It was very convenient, cost effective, and turned out very nice. Took about 4hrs including setup and take down. Nice honest guy and a hotrodder.

I didn't ask him too but he probably would have. It's raining now and being its a stone driveway most of it is gone now. It's just glass/sand and if you dig 2 ft in florida coastal area that's all your going to get anyway.

That's what I figured, got to be done in an area where it will disappear into the ground.

If you had a large paved area you could just sweep it up. Might even be easier to clean up. Don't know.

Never used this process before so I thought I'd share. Worked well for me.

I did that in my driveway with a really light breeze using crappy quartzite sand and got dust on cars all over the neighborhood. My parts were awesome. Their cars were dusty.

$475

I did have to spray down a little sand after the rain where all the blasting was done. Probably should have dropped a tarp down there. Still I'd say 80% of the sand/glass is gone.

Seems reasonable for someone to come out and do that at your place...I saw some clips of what you had done on cars...about 1000 for the car...maybe 1200??

Regardless, looks like good work.

Except for the rust inhibitor, the process has been around for decades
and is referred to as 'Vapor blasting'

What is the condition of the metal after blasting. Usually sandblasting leaves a very porous finish and needs to be sanded to be brought back to smooth.

Tinker, I wish my lower radiator pieces and floor board looked that good. Mine are like baby swiss. I'm going with Wescotts fiberglass replacements.

If you have a "porous" finish then sanding won't help, the panel has to be replaced.
A 'blasted' surface is one of the best surfaces to apply filler or primer to.

The surface looks and feels just like if it was media blasted the regular way. It was washed down with Hold Tight 102 by the operator which cleans the part of media and has a rust inhibitor in it. After they dried completely I also wiped them down with ospho so there wont be any flash rust over time. In florida bare metal will flash rust immediately.

39portlander there was pieces that I thought were going to be complete junk after blasting that actual turned out great, the lower radiator pieces was one of them. And a couple that I thought were really solid, ended up revealing some holes. Win some / lose some.

Tinker...Just out of curiosity, are you building a 38 or are you building a 39? The door panels are 39 and the grill is 38. I like the 38 grill a bit better than the 39 and also like the hood latch/ornament better for the 38 than the 39. The 38 grill used a little different latch assembly where it holds the hood closed than the 39.

Good catch . Its a 38. I had the door panels from a couple donor doors so I just threw them in. They may see there way to the classifieds. I thought about doing a few other pieces not related to the truck, but figured then Id have to paint them to store.

The operator still needs to know what he's doing with that system. My buddy got the hood and roof of the cab on his '59 pick-up, caved in because the operator used too high a pressure. Made a real mess. The media also packed into crevasses and retained moisture. Had a heck of a time cleaning the goop out of hidden areas with a wire and compressed air.
