Roll back rear to do clutch
Hi guys, on my '35 getting ready to do some work on tranny changes. Have come to the conclusion from threads the best way to go is roll the rear out. I know among other things the brakes linkage needs to be disconnected. Where on the linkage connections is that best to do? Also indicate if you know any threads with step by step procedure. I've seen it done with the spring attached to rear and not? This will be a first obviously.

Re: Roll back rear to do clutch
It should be a whole lot easier to remove the spring from the rear crossmember than from the axle housings! Even if you wanted to replace shackles while doing the clutch, it should still be easier to do that with the rear out of the car.

Re: Roll back rear to do clutch
hey Anthony, like Pete said, I just drop the spring out of the crossmember, disconnect the brake line, and role her back, easy ...
Good luck. |

Re: Roll back rear to do clutch
Where do you disconnect the brake linkage (mechanical stock )? Any pics appreciated.

Re: Roll back rear to do clutch
Sort of guessing, but the forward end of the rear brake rods must attach somewhere. That's where you would undo them.
Not too well up on 35's, but that is the case for earlier stuff. Mart. |

Re: Roll back rear to do clutch
Tony, When going back together, if you are by yourself it can be a real change to roll the rear end, and line up the u-joint at the same time. I have used the small ratchet straps, two of them. One on each side of the axle, and the other ends up near the trany. You can accutually steer the rear end by ratcheting one side or the other, all the time you are up front near the u-joint. I wish I had a picture!! good luck, Chuck S.

Re: Roll back rear to do clutch
Thx Chuck, good heads up. I have a couple of ratchet nylon belts and will use as suggested. I'm trying to get an answer on where to disconnect the brake linkage before rolling back. Guess I'm not making myself understood? Where did you disconnect them, at the face plate or further towards the center of the car? Just looking at a skematic looks like either 2 places on the inside of the two rear face plates or 4 places at the center of the car? Which ones or are there others?

Re: Roll back rear to do clutch
At the centre of the car, then when the axle is out of the way, so are the rods.

Re: Roll back rear to do clutch
I like to remove the clevis pins at the rear backing plate (probably what you are calling a face plate) brake lever, and remove the brake rod guide bolts from the wishbones, leaving the guides on the rods. Then carefully tie the brake rods up towards the frame somewhere to get them out of the way. Just my way of doing it.

My cars are later, juice brakes, but I would think up towards the front the rods should come off and go with the rear. |

Re: Roll back rear to do clutch
Mine was a 37 with hydraulic brakes, but either the front or rear clevis's will be your choice. In my case to get transmission out I had to pull right exhaust pipe where it went through frame to get transmission high enough to clear rear cross member, (Red's headers) 8BA Zeke

Re: Roll back rear to do clutch
Sounds like either way works, ( at backing plates or center of vehicle ), I like Marts suggestion to disconnect at center of car and roll the linkage back with the rear, just to get it all out of the way. Nice Ride and pic's Zeke!
Thx for all the good info / tips.

Re: Roll back rear to do clutch
Do like JM 35 Sedan says I've done it this way many times. I do remove the rear wheels and place a roll around jack under the banjo to pull it out. With the wheels off you don't need to jack up the body as high to get the spring out of the cross member.
When stabbing the u joint, be careful not to get your fingers caught in the clam shell. Use a piece of wire to hold the u joint up while stabbing the drive shaft. |

Re: Roll back rear to do clutch
You can do it either way when rear is coming out, but going back in with the rods attached may be more difficult to hook them up at brake cross shaft, plus you are at more of a risk for bending them.
