Default The Coppers and their Roadsters are coming.

How would you like to have this line up of Roadsters?

I wonder where all those roadsters are now and how many are still around.

Curious if those are horns or sirens mounted on the passenger side?

Also, the first car appears to have knobby style (winter?) tires on it.

There are a few pictures of NYC police cars around,in the book The Model A Ford as Henry built it there is a picture of the new cruisers. They are 31 Standard roadsters,(I see these are 30's)and with only 5000 or so built it looks like the city got a big charge of them.Cruisers were treated the same as now,as a disposable tool.I would bet it would be a rarity to find one that survived. What I want to know is,what did they do with the guys they arrested? Throw them over the hood or spare tire like a dead deer? Actually I think I remember reading about the paddy wagons on a regular route that would make pickups at certain points, and at set times, like a bus.In the summer we have a cop that rides around the little downtown area on a bicycle at night. We all tease him about what he does with the people he catches. He's a good sport,he says he tells them to get up on those handlebars right now,I'm runnin you in.

These roadsters bring to mind one that I grew up with that my father owned. I must have "driven" that car 50,000 miles when it was sitting up on blocks in the barn. He and I both worked on restoring it from when I was maybe eight years old on. I learned a lot about cars from that and my dad. Great memories.

The North Carolina Transportation Museum had/has a 30's Ford Police Car (not Model A) that featured a BulletProof Glass windshield. Worth the visit for the trains alone if you are in Central NC.

I like the photos on theoldmotor.com, but find the site a little hard to search. I couldn't find this picture of roadsters on there. Can you post a direct link?

Thanks!

KGBnut, I don't want to put a direct link in here because a few people thought it was too commercial in the past. I am not sure if I have posted this photo there or not as we have thousands.

The site is easy to search, the search box is at the bottom of the first batch of ads on the right. Type in what ever you want to search and click on the search button and if we have it you will see the results.

And...did the cops have radios in their roadsters or did they have to find a pay phone in an emergency!?

Nope - call boxes on street corners...

How many folks remember them ?

I still remember them being in service in Washington DC in the mid to late 1970's...

Thanks. I don't know why I didn't see the search box. I still couldn't find this particular image (which I was hoping to see in higher resolution), but I now know how to search.

I once worked with a retired motorcycle cop from the Kansas City area. I asked what he did when he picked up someone and had to take them to jail. He told me they handcuffed them to something like a lightpole and told them " don'tgo away" until he could go to a phone box and call for the paddywagon

I still have an unrestored 30 standard. It was originally painted a color that supposedly not used when it was built, and it has a factory rumble seat.People have sworn up and down that they never came that way,and I have let anybody that wanted to check it out. They have all agreed that it is factory. The car was painted in the 50's,mice ate the interior,so somebody redid the seats with some of the toughest material known to man.The car has somewhere around 35000 miles on it now.I would prefer a trunk, but the dogs ride in the rumble seat. When you park a car with a pair of 100 pound rotweilers in the back people give it a wide berth. What people don't know is that they could just jump in and drive off, dogs and all.

Yes they had radios. In May 1931 Ford released a special low speed generator to keep the batteries on radio equipped police cruisers charged at speeds below 15 mph.
More details are listed in the Service Bulletins.
