Default Brake drum color

Were all brake drums painted black originally? I just bought a set of unpainted cast iron drums from Mike's and they sure do look good 'silver'. Thanks in advance for any opinions.

They should be painted black. If left unpainted, they will probably be a brown "rust" color pretty soon.

If you like them silver , paint them high temp silver to prevent rust . Clear would also work .

Duh, wish I would have thought about that. I liked the natural look but painted them black. Never thought about clear coat.

You could paint them 'Cast Blast' if you like the natural cast iron color.

The factory dipped them in gloss black enamel , spun them in a centrifuge type device and then baked them.

FYI

Which ever color or brand of high temp paint you choose, we highly recommend a gloss finish (not flat, semi-gloss or satin) as a gloss finish repels brake and road dust better than the others. All you have to do is wash the dust off with water (no cleaners). Make sure they a cool to touch when washing.
