GAV Newbie question

My main jet probably needs a good cleaning because, while my car starts fine with about 3/4 turn open it really doesn't run smooth on the road or under acceleration unless it is about 1.5 to 2 turns open. However it idles better in the 1/2 open position (you can hear the engine idle rise as it leans out when closing the GAV). My plugs get black quickly....
