Mechanical fuel pump

Mechanical pump is not pumping fuel. It is basically new. I also have electric airtex 6 volt pump that was used only when vehicle not used for awhile.


It all worked fine on original engine. Swapped eng to a 59A with an Edlebrock intake. Had put the push rod for aluminum intake in and rotated engine to verify that the rod moved up and down.


Well the pump is not putting out. The electric pump works but would like to have mech pump working.

What should I check for? And how?

What should the stroke of the pushrod be? ...

Has the new Edelbrock manifold have the fuel pump mounting flange at same height as the old intake? There is two heights depending on intake used, exactly 1" difference, which require the correct length pushrod in order to work. If your current pushrod matches the manifold, could be you have a leak at some fitting into or out of the pump, or the flexi hose.

Maybe the rod moves up and down but is it in fact engaging the pump?

I test a pump by hand cranking or rotating the crankshaft until I see the push rod at its Highest point and then install the fuel pump on its stand and then with the gas line connected manually push the assembly up and down until I have gas comming out of the pump -- to a can or jar to veryify it all works. Yes it is a pain but it checks out the system will work when assembled.. WFM kx

Any air leak on the inlet side of the pump, will keep it from pumping.

I've had that happen, several times. Usually what ever hose goes from the chassis to the pump but, it can be the hose from the gas tank to the gas line.

Considering the intake manifold change, I'd check that out first.

Solved. Friend or should I say "friend" had moved my parts around and switched the fuel pump pushrods so I ended up with the wrong one in the engine. Go figure.
