Location of rumble seat steps.
My '39 convertible coupe came with a standard rear right fender with no tail light and no rumble seat steps. I was able to install a tail light in the right fender using measurements from the light in the left fender. Now my problem is determining where the two rumble seat steps should be located on that same right fender. I was able to find some steps in the swap meet section.
Are there technical drawings, that are accessible, which would show the correct locations? Looking at photos, I can get a rough idea but it would be nice to be more accurate. Thank you |

Re: Location of rumble seat steps.
On mine, the centre of the top step is 3 1/2" back from the 4th hole for the rear 1/4 stainless trim. The lower step centre is 7 1/2" above the middle of the upper tail light bolt and 10" in front of the last rear 1/4 stainless trim hole.
Hope that's not too confusing. Cheers, Chris.NZ. |

Re: Location of rumble seat steps.
Thank you Chris. This will be a good place to start. In looking at photos of other '39's, I now see that there is an additional, larger, step located on the bumper support.
Thanks again for the info. Phil |

Re: Location of rumble seat steps.
Swoop is an authority on these 39 convertible coupes, but my 39 does not have a step plate on the bumper arm, while my 34 Ford coupe does have one on the bumper arm. Just the two plates that Swoop has mentioned on the 39.

Swoop has been very generous to me with his knowledge. Here is the photo that shows that bumper step on a '39. It looks larger than the fender ones.

right rear fender of the 10 or so I have owned. The picture shows both if you look hard. If no one supplies locations I will go get measurements for you. You were lucky to find a set, they are very hard to find. G.M.

Re: Location of rumble seat steps.
Thank you G.M. Yes I was lucky. Attached is a photo of a '39 with the three steps, two on the fender (of which I just got a set), and one on the bumper brace. Don't know if the bumper brace one is correct but it was installed on this '39. Swoop gave me some measurements to use for the fender ones but if I have some problems, I will accept your offer to get me some measurements. Thank you, Phil

Re: Location of rumble seat steps.
There were only 2 steps for 39 - both on the fender.
The bumper step is a good idea but not original. I am no authority - I think that Kube and GM would be way ahead of me. |
