Shell X100 oil
I just learned that Shell X100 oil made for antique cars has been reintroduced for market. This is formulated for older cars with solid lifters. They even have reproduced the vintage look of the can. http://www.shellx100oil.com

Re: Shell X100 oil
it sure would be nice if they put the oil in a plain oil can and then lower the price by $29, after you get the first collectors can you don't need another. the oil is pricey for the model A guys who insist on following a 100 year old maintantace cycle oil changes at 500 miles

Re: Shell X100 oil
Bratton's sells ZDDP I believe for around 8 or 9 bucks a bottle, good for five quarts of motor oil. That's what I use in the Mach 1.
That retro Shell X-100 is kinda neat! I won't be buying it but at least we have a choice. I see it's endorsed by Wayne Carini of Chasing Classic Cars, some of the price no doubt goes to him. That can might cause some problems with Petroliana collectors down the line they would have to mark it 'Reproduction' or date it, otherwise there will be law suits. Same as they have to mark any reproduction gas globes, etc. Hemmings markets an oil like this too, around 60 bucks for five quarts. D/A Refinery in Indianapolis is selling a ZDDP enhanced oil also. Don't recall the price off hand. |

Re: Shell X100 oil
No additive needed if you use this oil. $33 for 6 qts.

Re: Shell X100 oil
Use the $10 5 qt supertech walmart oil jug and dump a bottle of $3 stp oil treatment (main ingredient is ZDDP or ZINC) and probably the same stuff.

Re: Shell X100 oil
If one was to mix one quart of 15W40 w/one quart of 5W20 would you end up w/10W30?

Re: Shell X100 oil
Is that the red bottle STP? If so, we can't get that in Calif. due to VOC reg's, etc. and supposedly zinc's effect on catalytic convertors.

Re: Shell X100 oil
Why are so many all OCD over ZDDP??? It wasn't in oil when Model A's were new. So no need for all the fussin' and fumin'! As they say in the 'PEANUTS' cartoon: "Good Grief"!!

Re: Shell X100 oil
no it wasn't but the engines only produced 40 h/p, not 300 like modern engine, low rpm engine not like the hi revving new stuff, low valve spring pressure because of slow turning engine and low valve lift, and the engines wore out at 20,000miles or less, didn't need good oil and that's what they didn't get

Re: Shell X100 oil
I have yet to hear of a documented case of Model A engine issues from not using the zinc additives. There certainly has been enough time pass and countless owners who do not use the additives or oil with it, for those dreaded problems to arise by now.

Count me in with the not needed for the A. But if it gives you comfort to use it, please go ahead and drive your A.

Re: Shell X100 oil
NO. I know the answer is NO. It's not that simple. I hope someone can help here, cuz I once read a VERY GOOD article on this (probably in a dentist's waiting room), but it totally explained how it works, and it's more complicated. All I can say is that the answer is out there, and you have to dig for it. -Chuck

Re: Shell X100 oil
Remember, Model A's have VERY SOFT valve springs & ZDDP is not REALLY needed. You'll get Grey Hair worrying about every little thing!
