Default Roadster door mystery

I'm rebuilding a couple of 31 roadsters and while putting on a new door skin I noticed a punched hole on the inner door next to the latch. Looked like a 357 shot through the door with jagged edges but not exiting the outer skin. At a Model A event with my club recently I had the opportunity to examine several others 30-31 roadsters and all had the same holes in the inner door. some 32's also had this hole. Does anyone know what this hole if for and why it's punched in and not drilled? Thanks, Steve

Hey Steve,
My '30 has the same 'punched' holes. I haven't a clue why. I have a guess that the holes were punched by a tool that held the part thereby somehow, while it was worked ? Expedient way to locate/hold inner skin, but probably a wild guess,eh ! I agree with your description though, as I've seen/made many such holes thru metal that way (.357).

I have looked at probably fifty 30-31 roadster doors and all have the same punched hole on both sides. Never seen them on a 28-29, but did find them on 32 roadster doors. Maybe one of the experts will pipe in and tell us the real reason for them. thanks, Steve

There are similar holes in the trunk and rumble lids:
