Lincoln Question

Recently there was a thread about early '50's Lincolns. In the March issue of Hemmings there is a "Classic Car Profile" on a 1956 Premiere. An option was available for a " dashboard-pushbutton lubrication system". Anybody know what was lubricated and what was the lube used?...Thanks.....Mark

As I recall there was a series of tubes with front end lubricant that hooked up primarily to lubricate suspension points and possibly other points.

I knew that was an option, but I've never seen one. I'm sure you could get more info on it from the Road Race Lincoln Register (RRLR) they have a web site hosted by Hemming's Motor News. Google them.

Thanks....I've seen central lube points on equipment, but never on the dashboard of a car....I'll Google the Lincoln Register....MARK

This option was also available in luxury cars of the late 20's & early 30's. It was not used again until Lincoln promoted it in the '50's nor has it been promoted since. Basically there were tubes that went to key lube points and a push of a button gave a shot of lube to the key points. U joint was omitted. Any problems with these systems usually are that the grease has hardened in the tube and must be pushed out with a wire and/or air pressure.

In the picture provided by 51 MERC-CT, it looks like a vacuum/servo thing up against the fire wall behind the grease can. Do you think it was triggered by an electric solenoid at the front? I can see why the grease would dry up and get hard in the tubes. I would like to have a push button rather than crawl underneath....I guess my 50 Custom Deluxe didn't have that option...LOL....MARK

Most likely a vacuum pump with the dashboard button triggering a vacuum shutoff valve.
The people who could afford one of these cars could afford to have someone else do the grease job. This system probably made them feel like one of the little people by greasing their own car with the push of a button.

My 1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser had it. Button on the dash lubed the chassis. Worked very well. Oh, how I wish I had that car now. That thing was fast. Used to love eating '57 Chevys alive with it.

That system was on a '30 Cord that I owned. It was operated by pushing a pedal with your foot, rather like a brake pedal. It used a heavy oil in a twist-on can like the one shown above.

I guess you could fabricate a foot operated pedal attached to a grease gun mounted under the hood or floor????....Or you can just get under the like we been doin'. We've gone from greasing with the push of a button to cars with no or hardly any fittings at all......Progress???.....MARK

But the amount of work fabricating all the plumbing and lines to all the grease fittings would be more than I would want to do.
