Default 1936 221 CU with Stromberg 97 stalls

My 1936 221 cu flathead with a Stromberg 97 stalls when I come to a stop. I tried adjusting the float using the dry method by holding the carb upside down so the top of the float is level with the edge of the bowl, but that didn't fix the stalling. It runs great otherwise. Any suggestions?

Needs more idle mixture. Try winding the the two screws out in the base a quarter turn at a time and see if it improves.

Is it all standard? Are you running a brake booster? Any vacuum leaks? Vacuum brake of distributor working o.k.?

That is not the way to set a Strom. float, sounds like its too high. Set 1/4" below the gasket surface dry with carb right side up and at the very end of the float away from the hingeand NOT on the hump part.Try it you will like it. ken ct. Use an old school steel needle and seat,NOT a rubber tipped needle.

Mike AZ, yep it starts right back up.

Ken CT, the upside down way is the recommended method by Stromberg using this link
http://www.stromberg-97.com/tech_cen...Inst_V3_HR.pdf
but I'll give yours adjustment a try.

Thanks guys

That method will give you a float level of at least 1/4" too high. The float should NEVER be that high in a closed position.Float should be closed with the float at least a 1/4" below the gasket surface. Its a wonder you dont have gas spilling out of the accel. pump hole in the top.Good way to have a fire. ken ct. Ive rebuilt hundreds of stroms and never set that high. ken ct.

Ken ct, thanks for the help. I dropped the float level down as suggested. It's a lot better now but still stalls occasionally when stopping. Also, when trying to adjust the idle mixture, the engine/vacuum does not change when turning the needle values all the way in or out.

I also noticed in several postings that you rebuild carbs, what do you charge to rebuild a stromberg 97?

Sounds like one, or both, of your idle mixture screws might be snubbed.
