Default How to remove one-piece valve guides?

How does a person remove the one-piece valve guides in the Ford A? I am assuming that it is a press fit of some kind. Hoping no special tools for remove or re-install are necessary.

Hi there and welcome to Fordbarn.

Installing the guides requires the use of a special driver so as not to break them or 'mushroom' the end as it is being driven down into the block. (When this happens, a special reamer is required.). Driving them out just requires pushing them on thru the bore and out into the lifter bore area. I will tell you that the guides are very brittle and are very easy to break. Generally freezing the guide and heating the bore slightly allows them to go in much easier, however they are still a tight fit. Good luck.

When driving them out it is best to use the piloted driver Brent mentions to eliminate "mushrooming" the end of the guide. Any amount you happen to deform the end of the guide will put additional stress on the often brittle guide bore when you drive it through to the valve chamber.
Good Day!

I understand the freezing and heating to install the new guides. But exactly what is the procedure? How is the new guide driven or pressed back in? As you know there is limited area inside the valve chamber to use a drift or hammer. Is there a special press tool? maybe a C-clamp could be used?

You drive the new guides in from the top,not the bottom.

When using the one pice guide. Use a driver that fits in the valve stem hole, then shoulders on the top of the guide. Your driver will go in through the hole where the valve will be.

Do you have the cam out? Are you sure you need to change the one pice guides?
They have not been used that long. Unless you have a lot of miles on them, I would think they would be fine.

A little lube on the guide, a good shouldered driver and a big hammer to install, then ream with the valve guide reamer. To remove, drive it through till it comes out the bottom. If there is not enough room for the guide to come through, break it off and then keep driving.
