Default Which side?

I'm thinking Pea Cup, my 1930 CCPU, might look a little nicer with one side mount spare tire.

Which side is proper? Either? What's your choice?

Most had the left mount from the factory. Since I like to say close to original I'd use the left side.

Not only that bug photographs are normally taken on the drivers side! Wayne

Left side fenders are easier to find.

In the event you ever actually needed it, you'd be much safer taking it off the right side, away from the traffic. You also dont have to deal with it every time you get in or out . I'd put it on the right.

If I had my druthers, I'd not have any fender mounted spares. I'd find someplace else to carry one, in or under the bed.

However, since I have one already mounted on the left fender, it's gonna stay that way.

While it is true that the great majority of standard issued pick-up trucks came with the spare mounted on the driver's side fender, it is also true that a great many of the 'Special Ordered' "Fleet Trucks" did come with the spare mounted on the passenger side of the vehicle. And of course the dealer would do anything to please a customer and make a sale.

Howerver, that being said, I'd put it on the driver's side, if it does not cause a problem with exiting and entering for the driver. With most 'issues' that develop during driving being with the 'gas/electrical' source, accessing the passenger side of the engine compartment to assess possible gas/electrical problems is MUCH easier WITHOUT a spare tire getting in the way.

Both of my Model A's have dual mounted 'Twin Spares', in both fenders. However, I have often thought about leaving the passenger side spare unmounted, so as to make accessing the engine compartment easier.

I know the phaeton had it on the driver's side originally because it was riveted on. But it does restrict the amount the door opens and makes it a challenge to get in and out of the car. With that said I put them on both fenders because I liked the looks of it 50 years ago when I did it. Of course when I did the sedan I left the spare in the rear. I have seen a pick up where they mounted the spare under the bed. They used a carrier from a modern truck but it sure works well. They have traveled with me on a couple of my longer tours and not having the spare in the way makes it easy for them to get in and out of the truck.

Now..

Does anyone know if a 600-16 tire on a 35 rim will fit into a standard wheel well?

Larry, long time since last contact. Mounting a usable 16 inch tire on the side mount requires custom mods. wider well, etc. I would not mount a tire with no inflation, whats the point? I also think it looks out of place to carry a 19 inch spare and run 16 inch tires. See my avatar for 15 inch set up. Will we see you at Hershey?
The chili is now at the MARC tent BUT..................Stop by the Rainmakers spaces CV 5-10 on Thursday afternoon for beer battered Brats.

Lets get the old gang going again. A lot of things started at Rainmakers Chili party, lets fire it up again. Les Andrews and John Lavoy started their books there, Bruce Adams sold the idea and kicked off International Model A Day. That sculptor guy unveiled his Chiken Coupe Bronze there. Tim Kelly bought Rainmaker Rons first Public offering of the Head Puller and Distributor Puller now carried by all the cat houses. The Splinterbox Great racer was conceived and staffed over a bowl of chili.

There was a time when we could count 100 guys from 7 countries at the chili Party. Pass the word.

See you at Hershey.

Larry,
If it were me, I'd mount it where my GUT FEELING told me to, BEFORE I even posted the question.

Since American A's usually had them on the left side, did the Canadian A's (or other countries) mount them on the right side, if they had driver's seat on the right...?

Bill..

While "gut feelings" are sometime the best, asking the talented folks here allows me a much better opinion source to base my decisions on..

Sometimes, as you profess, experience most always is good advice.

interesting... lets hope our friends from across the big blue pond chime in when they wake up in a few hours

ya ever notice how on a busy sidewalk we in the US walk on the same side of the sidewalk as if we were driving? is it backwards in England since they drive on the wrong side of the road?
