What size tyres for 1935 16" rims
Hi Guys,
Looking for some advice on what size tyres you use on the 1935 16" rims. I have a 1928 pickup and I am concerned about losing what little top end I had with a slightly shorter tyre. The 21" standard rims I have now are fitted with 4.50-4.75-21 cross ply.. The guys at the local tyre shop have fitted a 205R16C tyre to my sample 16" rim.. Its a bit shorter, but I like it.. What are you using on yours? I need to know the size please, not brand or style as I may not be able to supply down here. Thanks in advance Steve |

LT 215-85R16, stops on the dime, handles the road much better.

Didn't lose much speed changing tire types. I think it actually helps as your stability increases. Also never have and never will stop on a dime. I have the drum brake setup on mine and just plan for an extended stopping/slow down period else you'll get the typical roll from suspension, etc.

205 x 80 8ply Toyota or Nissan p/u, know of dozens that run them cheap too as cockies take them off & run mud grips ,Check your dealers there . or t/me , anything over 205 pos need to widen your rims, Also as heavier steering fit one of our Right Hand drive new shorter pitman arm ,

Re: What size tyres for 1935 16" rims
I checked the inflated diameter of the tires on the Coker website and compared them to the inflated tire diameter on my car. I found the 700R16 to match very closely and I used them on the rear of the car. I reduced the size of the fronts to 600R16 as they looked better in the front well.

Re: What size tyres for 1935 16" rims
I put the 600R16 tires on mine. I have also seen it recommended to use the same tires the base Toyota Rav4 uses which is 215/70R16.

Re: What size tyres for 1935 16" rims
I have 600x16 front and 750x16 on the rear. I had the rear rims widened 1 1/2". Those 750's are like an overdrive. :-)

Re: What size tyres for 1935 16" rims
Widening rims means welding them. That is specifically banned here so we are restricted to a narrow and high profile tyre and they MUST have a tube. The cost of 6.00X16 tyres is enough to make your eyes water. The ones that the guys in NZ use from cockies' utes would be OK but they don't come up here like they do over there. Maybe someone over there could send a set??

synchro909 At $25 a tire its a hell of a deal . They are 8 ply so no rocking on the side walls like less ply ones, but they are heavy so be expensive for freight , some run tubeless & some don't, Have a set of Kelsey's ill run tubes in, Come pick some up & take some b dissy,s home too, NZ nat A rally Te Anau Week before Easter, Cheers Derek

As for the tyres, I don't think I could get away with them in my cabin baggage! I will make enquiries about freighting them over but as we know, the Tasman is a very expensive stretch of water. How easy are they to get?

Re: What size tyres for 1935 16" rims
The 40 spoke Kelsey wires are available in 4.5" width. Not common but easily spotted. That size was intended for the 650 tires optional on commercials. I know the guys out in East Bum.... are thinking they never see them. When 16"s were cool some years ago, all kinds of sizes were squeezed into the 4" wide wheels. Not really to the spec of the tires but they got away with it. Being a cool guy myself, I'm going to 18" '32 wheels with narrow tires these days. Going with the trend! Good Luck: Fred A

Re: What size tyres for 1935 16" rims
I think that the 17 and 18 inch spoke wheels look better because they are taller and show more spoke length . To me the 16 inch 35 wheels look too low and squatty . I do run 1935 wheels with 700 X 16 mud grips on the back of one of my strip downs . The 700 x 16 tires are about the same height as the original 19 inch wheels and tires would be and the car sits at a more correct level .
