Re: Gangster lean
Will 8.20’s fit?
I put 7.50 x 16’s on my 47, and the only way to get them on/off was to jack up the body. |

Re: Gangster lean
Read all this.
ttps://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=77931&highlight=rake+40+ford Just changing tire size will not give you the "rake" shown in the original post. That car's suspension has be modified or changed to get that look. Is it open or closed drive line? Be sure to consider that once you start altering the suspension for the "Gangster Lean" or "rake" many other factors come into play like axle width, tire and fender clearance, oil pan clearance, steering arm clearance, scrub line issues, bump stop clearance, oil running down inside the torque tube if you keep stock drive train. Below is a photo with a completely stock suspension except for the 8:20 x 15 in. rear tires and the 5:60 x 15 in. front tires. 49-51 Merc rims (which won't accomodate the small Ford hubcaps. You could still change the tires using only one jack. Once you radically lower your car, you will need 2 jacks. One to first raise the frame. Then another to raise the axles for tire to clear ground and be removed. Lowering can quickly snowball into a "project" so do your homework. Last edited by 19Fordy; 05-22-2018 at 10:44 AM. |

Re: Gangster lean
5.50-16 up front, 7.00-16 in the rear, Posie’s reverse eye spring in the front. About all you will get without installing a dropped axle.

Re: Gangster lean
With the maybe 100 lb I took out of the front of the car with tube headers, aluminum heads, manifold, alternator, and radiator, the stance was definitely not the traditional hot rod rake I was looking for. With big/little tires it sat about level.
I replaced the tired and worn 37" front spring on my '41 with a 36.5" reverse eye Posies spring. Had to fab 2.75" shackles. Even If I could have gotten the 2.25" stock shackles back on that shorter spring, the shackles would have been much too flat, resulting in a very hard ride and high lateral stress on the spring perches. With a fresh spring in place of the tired old spring, I got .5" drop instead of the expected 1.5" drop. Next I will remove the 3rd leaf; that should get me another .5" or so, which will be close enough. I wish someone made a 2" drop axle. 4" is just way too much. |

Since your axle already has some drop, the net drop is more like 2" when compared to the stock axle. |

Re: Gangster lean
i don't think an original '37-'48 axle can be dropped more than about 2".

Re: Gangster lean
I'll be darned. After all these years I thought the advertised drop was the difference between stock axle and dropped axle. Live and learn.

Re: Gangster lean
Johnny, do you still have a straight axle? You can't really go gangster without wide white tires, can ya? Big/littles always look decent.

Re: Gangster lean
Thanks for all the replay's. like that Gangsta lean term haha
Some cool rides you guys have. Mine has a mustang II front suspension.Yes i would like to get wide whites I think my front tires are too big and the rear tires are too small. 225/60/15 all around, i think 15x7 wheels I put the hood on today and some front trim. Looks like the hood fitment is pretty good.
