Default direction of thermostat

Today I put in a thermostat and it's just one I had laying around that came with a box of other parts. I was just wondering which end pointed towards the radiator? From what I remember, the probe end pointed towards the radiator and the "cup" end pointed towards the engine.... or at least that's how I installed it. Can someone tell me if I'm right?

I think you put in in wrong .

The round copper thermo - solid end needs to be facing the engine .

The wax pellet end must face the hot water in the head, as the picture Mike posted shows. I cut off a piece of 2" barbbed plastic fitting to push down the hose to keep the thermostat form sliding up the hose. You want the stat as close to the head as possible. I drilled two 1/8" holes in my stat to make sure the hot water would circulate past the stat to warm it up.

The way a thermostat works is one side has a tiny plunger and a cavity of wax...the wax is formulated to melt at a certain temperature....when the wax melts the plunger is released and the thermostat opens...when the engine is off and cools down the little piston re-sticks into the wax as it gets solid and the whole process starts over...
The wax is always on the hot side of the water...

The "Deep-end" of the stat ( you look inside and see the coil-spring ), should face the engine.

The "pointy-end" faces the radiator.
