Amps is the result of volts being sent through a resistance, so I stand by my volts being sent to the field windings.

Thank you Tom for correcting erroneous information. I think most of us knew that

It seems 2831A's was banned for standing up to correcting bad info

Holster yer shootin' irons, boys. You're both right, really; both statements are true, but Tom's is more accurate. The third brush acts as a voltage tap off the commutator - the lower the voltage, the less current through the field windings, as Tom said.

Volts - Amps, I don't care. If you raise the brush that you can see through the opening you lower the output and if you push it down you raise the output. The brush can be moved with the finger but I usually turn off the motor when I stick my finger into anything, then start it again to check the result. You work with what you got. I got all my fingers.

I leave the dust cover off my generator, reason why is simple, these have mo cooling 'fan' or cooling holes or slots, you need all the cooling you can get, at least we get some cooling with that cover off and cool is a lot better than hot ... if you expect your generator to last.
