Re: More panel trucks please :)

I just sold a frame from a 49 Panel truck for $1100 (no motor or trans). It already has adjustable rear leaf spring shackles, new rear leaf springs, Fatman Fabrication MII front end and has been boxed. I was going to use it on my 51 Panel, but decided against it. I've had this frame in storage for over 4 years. Keep checking your local Craigslist, newspaper ads and eBay. You may find a parts F1 truck or Panel for $500. The frames between F1 trucks and Panels are virtually the same. The only differences is that the truck frames have six running board brackets (3 per side) and rear cab mounts. The Panel truck frame has four running board brackets (2 per side) and only the front cab mounts. The running board brackets are different between a Panel truck and a conventional truck. Running board brackets on a Panel are longer to accomodate for the short running boards, while conventional truck running board brackets are shorter to accomodate for the longer running board. Additionally, the fuel tank fits inside the frame rails on the left side directly after the brake master cylinder. Panel truck running board bracket is on top. Conventional truck running board bracket is on the bottom. Panel truck fuel tank and frame brackets (specific to Panel trucks only). Finally, not to add salt to your wounds, I scrapped a 50 Panel truck that had a complete frame. I couldn't sell the frame for the longest time and I needed to clear the trailer space. |

Re: More panel trucks please :)
Hi John, I started to get the body fitted back on the frame but not far enough to trailer it to Florida. I did bring the engine and trans so I have something to putts with. I got some strange comments from people on my four day migration to Florida. One guy thought for sure it was a "Hemi. Hope to see you in Florida this Winter. Pete

Re: More panel trucks please :)
Hey guys, looks like mine might be the "kid" of the bunch as it is a '56. I'll try to find the "before" pics when I bought it in California and drove it to Tampa, Fl. back in '99. Been a loooooooong time coming...about 1/2 way there now. It will have a 460 with at least 500 lbs. of torque, c6 tranny and starting with a 2.75 geared 9"...maybe will try a 3.25 posi if the 2.75 isn't too my liking. Never fired the engine yet, but getting the exhaust done this week!

Re: More panel trucks please :)
I just looked at the location of this thread; it looks like I'm in the wrong section. Is this thread meant to end at '53 ? If so, apologies...,

Aww I wouldn't worry about it. You've done a nice job so far on your truck. Looks like you got lucky and got one with a decent body since most of these panels are more beat up than pickups. |

Re: More panel trucks please :)
I have a 1936 Ford panel delivery that was originally used by a bulk fuel plant in Sumas, Washington. This is the original body color of yellow from the factory, but I changed the blue fenders to black. I used it for a number of years in advertising my hardware business. I have installed 1939 Ford brakes, a Columbia two speed rear axle, and a 59 AB engine. Having hauled oil products most of its life, there wasn't any rust out. It was an easy restoration. I restored it in about 1976. Haven't driven it in over twenty years.

Re: More panel trucks please :)
thanks GearHead. Yep, when I bought it, the ONLY through rust were some very small holes in the front drip rail area. The cab doors and rear doors were as solid as the other bare metal areas you see in the pics. I'm not a body guy, so I knew it would be better to pay more up front for some solid metal.....that's why the trip out West....For now, my "finished" goal will be the satin black look with some old school-type pin stripping in red/white and maybe silver. Would use a late model small block if I could do it over now....the 460 build requires premium fuel...oh, well.....

Re: More panel trucks please :)
I think that is actually a 39, 38 had multiple bars running vertically in the center, nice looking truck, there is a junk yard with a similar ambulance, it is a 40 and was used in a munitions plant for the US Army during WW2
