Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Not saying that just: I had trouble understanding your explanation of how on the old cars the spedo is not real accurate till it comes around for the 2nd time.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Bill, did I also explain how Convertibles go twice as fast as closed cars...??? Or maybe it just feels that way...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
I picked up the rebuilt starter for the '39 LZ yesterday and installed it however, the Optima battery was low so I put it on trickle charge for a few hours... Still not strong enough to crank the V-12 fast enough for it to fire... Think I'll take the Optima and have it tested and, if necessary, pick up a new battery (the Zephyr was converted to 12 volts before I got her). I also took the generator to have it converted to 12 volts, the car has a one wire alternator on it, and I want to put the generator back with a voltage regulator because, from an astatic standpoint, I don't like the way the alternator looks on a Flathead, to me its like a fish out of water...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Can we safely assume that you meant "aesthetic"? Just curious! DD

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Hey Coopman, You are correct! I meant to write aesthetic, I didn't catch that this morning when I posted it however, astatic could also apply as, in my opinion, an alternator looks unstable sitting atop a Flathead intake manifold. Thanks for pointing out the error, and for continuing to drop by my thread.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Well, that's your opinion, and you are certainly entitled to it. Its my opinion, and I'm entitled to it as well, that alternators look out of place on Flatheads, regardless of the method of attachment. I have both 6 and 12 volt generators (where applicable) in use on several of our Flatheads that are driven daily (and night time too) and I've never seen the need to install an alternator. The only reason I have an alternator on the '39 LZ is because the previous owner installed it. I must say, I'm surprised that you would be in favor of someone installing a non authentic part on a Flathead... What would the judges say...?

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Here's a question for you Woody aficionado's. I've got a line on a '39 Standard Woody and I'd like to know if there are any specific things I should look for, with respect to the wooden body parts, to determine if the asking price is realistic based on the overall condition. As always, help is appreciated.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Yesterday I made what I consider a valiant attempt to clean the garage, in preparation for the Florida "Barner's Bash" this coming weekend. I did make some progress with the garage but, more importantly, I've got four of our Flathead powered vehicles running and ready to cruise. Now all I need to do is wash them before Friday...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
While its true that you could, and maybe should, learn something new everyday, of late, I think I've been forgetting things I've learned along the way, especially things that are relevant to Flatheads, at an alarming rate... for example, I installed the '39 LZ carb without checking the fuel pump to confirm adequate fuel delivery. As a result, It took an inordinate amount of time and vast quantities of fuel poured down the carb, while trying to get the fuel pump to prime it. This is after I removed the air horn and filled the float bowl with gas... As a result, I'm fairly certain that my overzealous applications of fuel caused the PV to malfunction... I came to this conclusion when I attempted to adjust the air/fuel screws... All the way in, or all the way out, produced no discernible change in the carbs behavior. From every bit of knowledge I've gleaned after years of messin' with Flatheads, I surmised the PV to be the problem. I confirmed my suspicions by conferring with several well known Flathead carburetor aficionados'. The consensus; a toasted PV. The good news is a new PV, etc. is on the way. The bad news... it looks like I won't have the '39 LZ on the road for the Florida "Barner's Bash"... I guess I really did learn, or re-learn, something today. Now, if I can retain that tidbit for a while...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Now that the 2014 Florida "Barner's Bash" weekend is history, I can focus on the Flatheads in the garage once again. But first, we are going to the Amelia Island Concours d' Elegance this weekend for some R&R...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
The 2014 Bash was a great time. We really enjoyed it. You and the Cigar City Flathead crew did an excellent job on setting it up.
Enjoy the Amielia Island event. Take lots of pictures.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
We just got home from three days at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, I think this year's show was the best one yet. There were some beautiful Flathead V8's, etc. Tomorrow I'll post some photos for the Fords & Lincolns.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Here are a few photos from the weekend. First is a Pininfarina bodied '32 Ford.
This is one of the Sleeping Bear Resort Dunesmobiles. Here is an interesting Tri-Power set up on a Packard. A '47 Sportsman. Here's a question for Sportsman owners: What is the chrome piece on the top of the quarter panel for?

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
A few more...
In addition to the Flathead V8 Fords, there were dozens of fantastic vehicles on the show field and in the auction. I'll be happy to post more if you're interested.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Vic, The chrome pieces cover the joint between those pieces of wood. It's like an expansion joint. Gary

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Gary, That's interesting. I couldn't see any wood on the inside, and the quarter window and channel are between the exterior wood and the interior quarter panel. I know that in our '47 Convertible (not a Sportsman) the inner quarter panel covers the strut and braces for the top mechanism along with the window regulator. The position of the chrome escutcheons (for lack of a better description) is, as far as I can tell, nowhere near any wood...? I can't recall ever seeing the escutcheons on any other Sportsman, Ford or Mercury...
