Robert Shewman's 8BA thermostats
I recently installed Robert Shewman's 180 degree T-stats in my '32's 8BA with very good results, and feel cudos' to Mr. Shewman are in order.
I've had mixed results over the years with 180's that constantly varied in temp, ran too warm, or failed prematurely. I mistakenly ran 160's for too long to keep the temps "comfortable" but knew I should to return to 180's, and and decided to try R.S.'s. Temps come up gradual and stay around 180 at speed, and never rose higher than 195 in Louisville traffic recently. These are the best performing T-stats I've ever used. |

Have the same results with Robershaw ( 330-180)flow cooler high flow thermostats, does he manufacture them or are his special made for him ?

Re: Robert Shewman's 8BA thermostats
I've heard good things about Mr Shewman's thermostats.
I've also had good luck with Subaru T Stats in my flathead powered 32. I think they are 170 degree |

I have been using those in my 46 over the past 2 years and also had good luck with them-especially in the Florida heat.

Re: Robert Shewman's 8BA thermostats
I've been using the Stant Superstat #45358 for many years in my 39. I do have to grind the OD down to fit in the hoses. They are 180 deg. and do fit in the 8BA housings. My understanding is that Shewman drills holes in the thermostats which would account for the gradual warm-up. I do drill one hole in the Stants to allow air to purge.

Re: Robert Shewman's 8BA thermostats
I bought a set of 8BA thermostats on the "close-out" list Rock Auto sends me from time to time. I really didn't need any at the time I bought them, but I ordered them anyway, because they were dirt cheap and if they fail, they are supposed to fail in the "open" position. I don't know how they do it, but I thought it was a good idea. I put them in the Mercury engine when I installed it in my '51 Ford a couple of years ago, and they seem to be working just fine. Something to think about.

Re: Robert Shewman's 8BA thermostats
Have sent email to Bob Shewman to purchase a set of 180 thermostats.
Have not heard back yet? Used the above contact. Phil NZ |
