The engine that had a 7.6:1 comp ratio was a 272 two barrel engine. The police interceptors in '55 had 4 barrel carbs whether they were 272's or 292's.

My documentation is everything I have ever read or seen in my life. The manual was printed earlier than the 272 4 barrel was decided to be in production, since it isn't in the shop manual.

"The ECJ required premium fuel. The INTERCEPTOR did not as most government fleets used their fuel stocks for all vehicles (gasoline). The 7.6:1 CR only required regular gasoline."

"There are differences between POLICE and HP engines."

Documentation ? What is an HP engine in '55 ?

In the BIG Master Holley book they list a 4bbl carb for the 55 Ford Fairlane and Wagons with Power Pack kit.

Curiously it does not mention what sized engine this carb is attached to as it usually does with there specifications.

A little fuel for the campfire !

The 1955 'POWER PACK' was the 272 4V SPECIAL 188HP.

I had a bulletin describing the engine but can't find it. Do you have a copy?

The documentation is in the shop manual. The ECJ Engines are the HP (or what FORD considered HP at that time period) engines for the 1955 model run.

A POLICE PACKAGE could include any available engine. It depended on the departments needs and budget.

http://www.oldcarbrochures.org/North...cy_Vehicles-08. On page 8 it shows the engines, but this is just a brochure. Hard to tell what actually ended up at the dealer.

I now realize the '55 Interceptor was the same as the '55 Mercury base engine (188 HP). And it did have a 7.6 to 1 comp ratio. Forgot about that variation of the 292.
I apologize for insisting otherwise in earlier posts.

Sal, you needn't apologize for anything. This was a discussion and with these we find out what the facts are (were) and throw-out a lot of old wives tales.

I read somewhere that the 292 and the 312 blocks were the same and the 272 was different. So maybe the 272 can't be bored out to 292, because of wall thickness. I am going to see the car on the 29th, the owner swears it's a 292, we'll see. Al

The 272CI block can be machined to 292CI block specifications (cyl bore).

Ok enough all ready, I'm going by the casting no's on the block. If it shows a 272 no I won't buy it. He said-she said. Al
