Early Flathead removal proper sequence
I’m at my shop in NC with a couple days to work on my 36 Deluxe Fordor. I have the motor and transmission disconnected from the drive shaft. At least I think I do. Will the motor and trans slide forward and then the transmission will drop down to allow me to remove the motor/transmission together ? I don’t want to damage anything.

Re: Early Flathead removal proper sequence
You'll have to take the handbrake lever off. It might be worth taking the top off the transmission too, if you're struggling for clearance with the firewall. (Assuming you've taken the lever out). Cover the trans with a clean cloth if you take the top off.
Just start removing it and keep taking things off if they're in the way. Do you have the radiator and grille out of the way? Mart. |

Hand brake is off but shifter is still attached. Whole front of car is off so no issues there.

Re: Early Flathead removal proper sequence
If it is as we see in your picture, you need to do a couple of additional steps. You need to remove those two stamped, bell-shaped pieces (top and bottom). They are held together by the two fasteners seen in the picture with a screwdriver slot, one on either side, left and right. Once you remove those pieces, you will see the U-joint. With those two clamshell pieces removed, the engine/trans/U-joint should now slide forward and OFF of the drive shaft. DD

Re: Early Flathead removal proper sequence
The u-joint is under the round part should be able to slide the motor and transmission ahead if you have the shift off

Re: Early Flathead removal proper sequence
Ok. Does the shifter come out if I disconnect the top bolts and lift up? And while I have such great help, how do the brake and clutch pedals come off so I can get the floor board out?

Re: Early Flathead removal proper sequence
Brake and clutch pedal pads unscrew from the levers; might take a big pipe wrench. Just hand tighten when you put them back on.
You will need to tilt the engine up and transmission down on the way out; to do that you need a leveler on your hoist. About $30 at Pep Boys. Advise draining the engine and transmission oil first. |

Re: Early Flathead removal proper sequence
You can remove just the shifter. Watch the shifter locating pin. Pull that sucker out already!

Heading down to the shop in a little bit to get started. Two grandsons will be helping so it will be a good day. Thanks for the help. I’m sure I will have more questions.

Re: Early Flathead removal proper sequence
Got the motor out with no problems. Should have taken the headers out and not just loose to give more room. Thanks for all the advice.

Yes I don’t think flip flops were a good choice but it was good to have my grandson help

Re: Early Flathead removal proper sequence
Yes lots of pictures is the only way I will ever get it back together. This is a long term project so I’m sure my memory won’t work that long.
