Default Thermoquail

Does anyone besides me have trouble with their thermoquail turning side ways and falling open while driving? I have bought new rubber rings and that don't help for over 4 hours running time. The last thing I've done is cut out a plastic shim to go under the rubber. Just wondering what everyone else does.

I have one with the same problem. Shimming it is the only solution I've found.

I have 2 thermo quails on 2 cars and never had a problem.

Just a word of caution, to open and close, grab the bird by the head and top of back only.

If you grab it naturally you will find your fingers around and under and the thermometer breaks easily.

Never let anyone else touch the bird .

Last week I had a friend stop by with his 29 coupe. He has the same problem with his quail cap. It is loose at gasket fit and rotates an inch or so as he drives.

Looking for a solution with a better fitting gasket, or is it an install issue?? His gasket causes a loose fit when securing the quail.

I gave up on thermoquail caps. The two that I used never registered and they are famous for ruining the radiator neck.

My thermoquail has never vibrated open. I would look at the gaskets first.

I had to cut my own upper gasket... The lower one, which is hidden worked fine but the upper was useless --too thin. I got a few rubber washer from Sears hardware and cut my own... It took more playing with than shown below but works very well... I wanted just the right thickness to hold but not too much to too extra stress on the quail hinge. So far about 3 months and nothing comes out from it... Took a nice 18 mile city drive today in 85F.. all dry bird...

Found them on Amazon, but I imagine they're widely available:

O ring 3.5x48 mm

O-ring is great idea.

I have used a couple brass gas gauge shims under the rubber that was supplied....same diam.

I bought some #223 E70 O-rings from the O-Ring Store online. Cost is $.18 each. Costs more to ship! One O-ring works perfectly in my thermoquail.
