It can effect how the engine runs and will contribute to backfire right after the engine is shut down. Most times a warped or sagging exhaust manifold will be the main culpret.

Re: manifold exhaust leak no. 4 cyl.
Engines will run fine even without any exhaust manifold, and all types have been used on engines including short little stub pipes on airplanes.
So I don't think running badly is the result of exhaust unless there is a restriction. Having said that, there is all kinds of shapes and lengths of exhaust pipes that are used to help the engine run and sound better. If there is an air leak into the exhaust system it will allow extra fuel that has not been burnt to ignite on the hot exhaust and cause a backfire. Also an exhaust leak can sound a lot like a miss. A leaking manifold problem is usually not too hard to fix, and if you have a bad manifold, changing it out is a really good idea. Both the intake and exhaust systems are critical but for different reasons, exhaust gas in the cab is never a good thing. |
