Default Good info on cooling system.

I have only been a member of this forum since March of last year, but during this time I have read many good questions being asked on our cars cooling system.

After 60 years of being involved with Model A Ford’s, I have accumulated a lot of information.

I would recommend anyone who has an interest in how the cooling system works. Go on line to “Cooling System Seminar Presentation, Rocky Mountain Model A Club” dated 2/25/12. Print it out. This presentation could either answer some of your questions or confirm some of your concerns. Enjoy.

Great article. Well researched.

Only one slight issue - the heat transfer between the radiator and air is convection not radiation, but otherwise a very good report

Spoken like a true engineer!

You are correct, to the air it is forced convection. To the firewall (and eventually to my legs) there is some radiation, but it is negligible compared to what the air takes away.

I wonder how the "radiator" was so named, back in the day? Because "convectionator" sounded weird?

Actually, it sounds like something out of a Woody Allen movie. Very futuristic.

The one thing I would ADD to this presentation is that it is possible to install a bypass hose around the thermostat in a Model A, and then you can use a thermostat and not have the coolant stagnant inside the engine block while waiting for the thermostat to open (which will cause the problems outlined).

A basic 5/8" heater hose between the water pump outlet (before the thermostat) that connects back at the water inlet on the side of the block allows coolant to circulate in a nice closed loop while the engine warms up uniformly. Then as the hot water warms up the thermostat, it opens and some hot water goes out into the top of the radiator. You get a nice uniform warm up in the block. Very easy to do, the parts are all available "from the usual suspects".

That is a great presentation.
I'm having overheating problems and this comes at the perfect time for me.
Thanks much.

Great article, Thank you! I had been debating about a thermostat and based on reading, I am going to stick to how Henry engineered and built it now!
