Default Pre Lube Motor

Just bought a rolling chassis that has been sitting for a unknown period.
The Gent that I bought it from had no info as far the last time it ran.
It appears that it has had a lot of work done by the condition it is in.
This was in a trade transaction so info was not available .

So my question should I Pre Lube the motor and How. I know with
later model motors Pre Lube with the Dizzy out gets oil pressure up.

Thanks George

George; I am not quite sure what you are asking. If it hasn't run in a long time , then there is a recommended series of steps that you should go through. They have been posted on this site many times but to give you a start check some of the following.

!. Remove the pan and valve side cover. clean sludge out.. You don't want to pump that grit through the engine when started.

2. Make sure everything turns freely with the crank.

3. Reverse flush the cooling system. Fill the engine with Evapo Rust or some similar product and let set for several days. Then flush again.

4. Check electoral system and you should be near ready to go, just wait for more knowledgeable people to respond and good luck. Jack

Would not say I am more knowledgeable, but after draining the motor oil, pour a quart of the new oil into the distributor hole to prime the valve area.

Make sure if it has old gas, flush out the old gas, use new gas.

Splash and gravity oil system. The rods have dipper that splash through a puddle of oil each time the crank turns so prelube for them isn't necessary. As mentioned above, pouring 2 quarts of oil down the distributor holes prelube the gravity side of the system, the valve chamber is a lake, and pipes feed off it to lube the camshaft and main bearings. The model a oil pumps job is to lift oil from the pan to the valve chamber,it trickles down the pipes from there..easily the most over engineered item on the car..

Re; Pre Lube with the Dizzy out gets oil pressure up
With the distributor out there would be no way to get the pressure up. This is a very low pressure system which relies on oil flow to the mains from the valve gallery and splash from the inside to rods cam etc. That is why you add a qt of oil thru the hole the dist sits in so the gallery has a supple of oil to mains. Don't over fill, the system holds approx 5 qt of oil BONE dry. Drain and add total of 4 qt to start with. After running check and adjust. When you install the dip stick make sure it is seated all the way to the loop, not sitting on the short extension under the loop.

This is a no-pressure system. Removing the dist and pouring a quart down the hole pre-lubes the main bearings, pouring one in the oil-fill tube gives oil to the rods.

assuming this is an unmodified motor...........

Might be good to post a pic or two of the valve chamber side here on this thread

Thanks to everyone for the help.. I did not mention that this chassis was a restored some

time back and again not sure how long ago. But by the looks it doesn't seem that is was

hardly ever driven no road film super clean. I was told took the body off for a Hot Rod

and I got the chassis. I did take the cover off the bellhousing and inside it looked new

it had a little surface rust and a sticky clutch but was able with a little blaster it worked

fine. Going to crank her up today.. Thanks again George
