Default Finished - Custom 20x10 Super Singles For My 1936 1-1/2 Ton

Some of you may remember my story from last summer: I was getting hassled by the local boys-in-blue because my truck needed to be registered commercially if I ran it as a dually.
https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...86#post1644486

Long story short I opted to go with a set of custom super singles, running 305/55R20 Mud Tires. I stuck with Firestone's to pay respect to the available tires of yesteryear. The 10 ply's actually give me equal carrying capacity as the original 6.00-20's

The rims are fabricated from pre-made 20x10 wheel hoops and custom centers I designed and had cut by a local CNC shop. Powder coated for maximum durability, they should last as long as the truck.

Very nice job and the tire choice compliments the early look. At first glance it still has somewhat of the dually look. Shame you had to go to all that effort and your state troopers can’t overlook a rule for a historically significant truck.

I'll say, another decision maker of the whole project was I couldn't find "off road style" tires for the dually. The only reproductions available (that I could find) are the firestone highway tires. I frequently use this truck to get cordwood and dirt. I'm alway off in soft ground and those highway tirse SUCK. With my rear rubber on it's way out and a set of 4 6.50-20's costing over 1k with tubes it was equal money to build the custom wheels myself and outfit them with some tires that might actually give me float & traction.

You did a great job and because of your fab skills and knowledge you were able to do it cost effectively but I would bet those would be very expensive wheels for the average old truck enthusiast to have made paying shop rates. Were you able to go tubeless? I would think there’s quite a bit of weight savings in your setup compared to two sets of wheels/tires/tubes and flaps.

I had 2 quotes from wheel manufactures and they were $500 and $900 per rim + shipping. I was able to fabricate mine for $325 each.

As for the weight I opted for a heavy duty rim hoop as well as 1/2" plate for the center. They weigh in at 135lb / assembly. I didn't have a chance to weigh my originals, but I would guess the new ones are lighter.

They are tubless as well.

Looks great! From the pics, you really have to look to see that they are not duels. At first glance nothing looks out of the normal.

Very nice job, and looks appropriate to the truck for the average observer. Cool solution!

Where did you get the rims?
