Riviting the seat frame...
Before taking apart the seat riser on my 28 rdst. I was studing how it was assembled. The seat riser to the body,at the door jam, can't use a regular straight pneumatic tool. I think they used a C-frame or alligator tool! Any pics or does anybody know? Dudley

Re: Riviting the seat frame...
I'm about ready to rivet my seat riser. On my 29 coupe I have a piece of axle that I ground a notch into that fits around the edge of seat riser. I hope that will work.

Re: Riviting the seat frame...
Dudley,
I believe that Ford did use some kind of pneumatic "squeezer" to install some of the rivets that are impossible to set with a straight bucking bar and regular air tool. I kind of know the rivets you are referring to in your roadster. They are probably the ones toward the back part of the seat riser. I think I sent you the setup I used to rivet the "regular" seat riser, floorpan and trunk platform rivets. If not, let me know. You might have to use headlight replacement bolts, which are the ones that look like rivets from the top. The other alternative is to use a MIG and touch the raw end to tack weld them in place. Neither method is ideal. I have seen C type pneumatic rivet squeezers, however most wont set 3/16" steel rivets. They are for aluminum rivets. Besides, they a quite expensive. BTW, I talked to Jim Dix at Big Flats Rivet Co. some time back and he said that he uses only 40# air pressure to set his rivets, both waffle type and rounded. I haven't tried 40# yet, so I don't know if it works better than the 90# I have used in the past. Dennis, I don't remember if I sent you some pictures of the floorpan, seat riser and trunk platform riveting setup I used on my coupe. If you haven't seen them and want to see how I riveted them in place, let me know and I can send you the pictures. Rusty Nelson |
