Lubrication for Y block water pump shaft (?)
What is that hole in the water pump of my '54 y block? It's about 1/8" in diameter, is at the top of the pump and exposes the inner shaft. It looks like a lubrication port of some type for the shaft, but the shop manual doesn't seem to mention anything about putting lubricant in it. Thanks

It is a coolant seepage hole that alerts you to a bad WP seal.

DO NOT squirt oil down the 1/8 inch diameter hole in the water pump shaft neck casting. If you do, you will be replacing your water pump in less than a week. That hole is only there to allow water to exit when the pump seal goes bad (letting you know that you need to rebuild the pump or get a new one).
