1936 Steering Box
My '36 Steering box is getting wonky. I have tried to find info on replacing it but there is no search box. Can somebody recommend a thread on replacing a '36 steering box with a '37 and up box?
Thanks |

Re: 1936 Steering Box
I suggest a 37 through 40 steering box. Find one with the pitman arm, since I am not sure if your 36 pitman will work on the 37-40 box. Try to get the 37-40 steering box mounting bracket that is riveted to the frame. Otherwise you will have to figure out how to relocate one or more of the mounting holes in your 36 bracket to mount the 37-40 steering box at the correct angle. Bob Drake sells a 37-40 reproduction mounting bracket for $40.00. Most of the regular Ford parts vendors sell a steering box rebuild/reseal kit. If you need a worm gear, selector shaft or bearings, NOS parts are available. Ask the parts vendors.
Note: If you make the steering box conversion and are considering tube headers, order headers for a 37-40. The 37-40 box is a bit larger than the 35-36 box I recently installed a 39 box in my 35 using a 37-40 mounting bracket. It definitely improves the steering effort. The worse part is drilling out the rivets in the 35/36 mounting bracket. x

Re: 1936 Steering Box
I did it on my old '36 3-window; it is a worthwhile project.
