Oil slinger or rear main seal ?
I have a '39 -'40 85hp V8 in a '37 coupe . It leaks oil in the rear of the engine . Does this engine have a slinger , or an actual rear main seal ?
I have read that if your early Ford V8 does not leak oil , then there is something wrong w/it . Well , mine leaks , so does that mean that mine is ok & normal ? I recall seeing pics of these cars in dealer showrooms w/drip pans under them ! Thanks in advance - FF |

Your engine came with a slinger and yes, oil leaks are pretty common.

Re: Oil slinger or rear main seal ?
Increased pressure inside the engine will blow oil around the slinger.

Re: Oil slinger or rear main seal ?
81A motors and up had a rope seal in the rear main. Also a slinger to take some oil load off the seal. At least that is what I have always found.

Rope seals didn't come out untill 46, all earlier had the slinger, if you over fill the oil it will leak bad. Walt
