600W is about a 250 weight. I've used 140 with no problems especially in cooler weather.

Thanks Patrick, cool weather? we are just opposite waiting for our 2 weeks of summer with highs of 20 C..... first time for me with a Model A, always cold so something that sticks to and lubricates gear train is what i need , but be able to shift reasonably smooth, not like trying to mix concrete . i will check around and take a look into your suggestions.

I have been using 80-140 for years. Before that just plane 90w. The sport coupe has 25,000 miles with 80-140w.

Try industrial lubricant---machinery supply houses
what is called 600w now is steam cylinder oil---for steam and worm gears
the 600 series of gear lubes---for spur and bevel gears is what you want, I have Shell Omola 680, but perhaps you want the next thinner because of your temps

regular automotive gear oils will protect the gears----quite possible 140 weight could be good

If you read any old model a news the former tech adviser Rodger Coffmen use to suggested and always used straight STP . This must be available to you in Canada.

Lubriplate Company is one supplier with many grades such as SPO288, etc. Try their website for distributors and products.

Or try 1/2 STP and 1/2 lucas Oil Stabilyser. (sp) I don't like pure, 100% STP, but it works. This concoction shouldn't leak out. Is thick enough to slow the gears down for shifting. and has superior lubricating properties.

I use either Chevron 680 or Mobil 680 gear oil in both my transmission and differential. It is certainly heavy enough to slow the gears in the transmission when coming to a stop. It is also an excellent lubricant. Purchase a five gallon pail and you will be stocked with oil for years to come. You will most likely have to go to a wholesale supplier for this product.

I use 1/2 Lucas oil stabilizer and 1/2 Lucas heavy duty gear oil.

This has been around the block a few times and the consensus includes
TEXACO Meropa 680,
SHELL Omala 680,
MOBILE Mobilgear 600 XP, and
AMSOIL ISO 460 =SAE 139

Not just now, but it has always been that that way.
