Default Transmission ID?

A good old friend of mine is not doing too well and in a nursing home now. His wife will have monumental task to clean out his barn from years of hoarding. He has a nice 46 pickup that I have worked on for a long time.
Anyway, here is a mystery for me. What is this big transmission? If it is a Ford, maybe a big truck? I may have to take a close up pic and repost. Thanks, John

Looks like a T-9 4-speed. They were mostly used in 3/4 ton on up Ford trucks but some were installed in 1/2 ton commercials. They are non-synchro but they were usable. I learned how to drive a floorshift in a 1952 F3 with one of those in it.

If it's got the hogs head on it that is worth way more than the trans.

More like a 59-T and what anyone is worth paying. Most get junked. If it was a T-98 for a flathead ford about $250 if its in decent shape.

We would need better photos to tell for certain what it is. The early ones had a fixed bell as part of the casting and had reverse lock out. They also had the back end to work with a torque tube. The removable type half bell came in the early 40s and the lockout went away. The T98 was the replacement in the 50s but they are similar in size but a bit larger. I think they have a different rear mount set up.

Here is a good link for ID. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...on-photos.html

You can tell a T98 by the top with just what shows in that picture. They weren't a replacement, they were an option and mostly found in F6 trucks behind a 6 cylinder.

That one has a half ton rear mount and probably out of a 42 to 47 pickup

At a glance the top is longer and if you look close it has T98 on it.

The T98 did replace the T9, just not right away. The T98 was replaced by the T18.
