I think the last starter I bought cost $5 at the Amherst, NH Antique Car Flea Market.
No bendix. Its been at least three years. The problem with the sticking bendix may be not so much a problem with the bendix but rather the ring gear. One "in the day" solution involves removing the ring gear (this can be done cold with a punch and hammer and "walking" it gently off it's seat until it falls loose) and then replacing the ring gear (done by heating up to 500 degrees in the wife's oven and dropping it on) perhaps 90 degrees out of original phase. When the engine stops it typically stops at two positions 180 degrees apart. When the bendix engages these spots, it wears these spots more significantly than the rest of the ring gear. Moving the ring gear 90 degrees brings you to a "fresher" section of gear and can reduce jamming. Joe K
