Cracker Barrels are the Howard Johnsons of the 21st Century... My wife and I always stop at the Cracker Barrel in Macon, Ga. on the drive up to my moms in Sautee, Ga. The food is always good as well as the service. The only differences are no orange roof and no 28 flavors of ice-cream at Cracker Barrel... I remember as a kid in the late '50's and early '60's it was a real treat for my sister and me if we stayed at a Howard Johnsons Motor Lodge on a trip from Long Island to Georgia to visit my Grandparents.

Add their coleslaw and hashbrown casserole to the plate of meat-loaf and I am a happy camper! The closest one I have found to the great STATE of Washington is in Boise,ID.

Every Thursday nite my mouth starts watering for the weekly special turkey dinner at the Venice FL. location. Only problem is I'm stuck in NS for the winter this year. Mouth still waters though..... This thread really got hijacked didn't it! Bill

Mmmm...hashbrown casserole...(drooll) All kiddng aside, chicken'n'dumplings are pretty heavy-er-tasty, too. But since my wife has us on the "scared straight" diet where anything with wheat flour, sugar, starches, etc. is verboten, we don't stop to eat there. In simple terms, the stuff in processed and genetically modified foods is bad for you - it's like the other, notorious form of 'crack' in that you become addicted to it and want more. I think I'd rather die early, happy and fat than live long, be miserable and skinny.

Favorite CB meal? Chicken fried chicken steak with mashed potatoes, biscuits and gravy. Now that's good eatin'!

When we're on a road trip in the B Belt, we look for them. Good food and we rent the audio discs, listen and trade them off at the next CB. Problem is, we wind up keeping the last disc because there aren't any CBs in the west. My wife wants some of their porch chairs but no way to get them home without mucho dinero shipping charges.

Ken, yeah, I think so, but for me, I'd feel dumb buying something in a box that I could have the fun of building from scratch anyway. Funny thing is, I used to have time for that kind of stuff before I retirerd...

True American success story, what this country is all about. I'll stop here or someone will blow the 'political' whistle.

Google it. Interesting story God bless the creators of Cracker Barrel.
Politics and bold print aside, I've eaten at CB and prefer a local family run diner with fresh made food.

Cracker Barrel - Bob Evans - Tim Horton's ....

If you have no sense of adventure - no imagination ....

If you are too lazy to drive far off the interstate ....

There is where you will be ....

I am on the road every day and I seek out the local family cafe

Jim, I have to say I agree with you. There is much more adventure to be had than what you can get at Bob Evans. I'm okay with the breakfasts at CB, but I don't order from the menu, all that Uncle Hershel stuff mixes my mind up. I just tell 'em I want eggs, bacon, toast, hash browns, and grits.

Be careful on that Cross Bronx Expressway!

Guess I stop at the one where 84 and Mass Pike merge about 2 or 3 times a year. they always have a display of old car related stuff. Bought some nice Ford V8 coffee mugs (ford licensed) and a lot of good man cave stuff. Good place to drain the human radiator and look around.

Yea me too i have less time to do things i want to do on my own 36 than before when i was working and rebuilding on the side. The rebuilding has kinda taken over my life and i need a break.I got to get it running again by June or my wife is going to hound me to sell it as is. LOL ken ct.

We're not big fans of CB but have gone to a few around the country. Best things we like is their store-full of tourist trap stuff and we've been victimized by some of it, which isn't always a bad thing.

But if we have the opportunity to do so, we opt for the non-chain eateries as much as possible.

Wifey gets a kick outta a couple of those places when she sees the OFs (F not for Ford..) all sittin' at a big table & looking grumpy (I don't tell her that if she wasn't with me I'd be sittin' with them!)

Well, if any of you travel to Hershey on Rt. 78 West, you need to go past Allentown and venture into Hamburg, PA and stop at the Hamburg Diner in the center of town. It tops CB IMHO, but I'll always prefer a local over a chain.

The rest of my family, not so much.

Glad to see you all are connoisseurs of breakfast food, but you are missing the point that Cracker Barrel is like a car show. It educates and wows some people not up to speed with a past culture. All the doo dads there were thrown away in the 50s for Formica and plastic. I actually find it refreshing. Like other things in life- it ain't for everyone.
