Check first for loose or corroded wire/terminals on the sensor or gauge.

If the engine is not hot, you may just have a loose connection or the sending unit with 2 connections could be opening up.

Are you puking up antifreeze? If the gauge is pinned, I would think you would see a lot of coolant lose through the overflow. Mine did that a few years ago - turned out it was a leaking head gasket.

Did you know there is only one stop leak on the market today, designed for non pressurized systems? I called all three manufacturers tech lines a couple of years ago, and that's whAt I found out. Chuck

Ok guys. It turns out it was the gauge. I ordered two SW mechanical temp gauges and it turns out they have a huge pipe thread that is larger than the holes in the heads. Is there an adapter or can I braze a bung in to each water neck. If so, will this give me an accurate temp.

Most gauges come with a handful of adaptor fittings. I wouldn't braze/weld/solder anything. Go to an auto parts/plumbing supply/hardware store for a set of adaptors.

The heads are usually tapped 3/8 pipe thread. As Mike said, usually the gauges come with a bunch of adapters. Might have to go an auto supply store to get some if they didn't come with yours.
