Default 2nd gear bog down

Hi, I'm new to this site. It's great! So I have a 52 Ford with a 53 Merc flathead. This motor came with a tea pot carb, which I purchased re-manned and bench tested before I installed it. I was having a lot of hesitation, bogging down when acceleration. So far, I've changed out points and condenser, distributor cap, coil. I had a problem with older spark plug wires, and changed all those out yesterday. Specs call for BTDC 2 degrees. Since there is no marking on block for above and below TDC, I've adjusted a little at a time going both directions. In first gear, I can accelerate with no issue, 2nd gear it boggs down at higher spead. 3rd gear no issues. I've moved the jets on the carb to recommended 1 turn out. Any suggestions?

For accelerating through a particular rpm range, there is no reason why the engine should perform differently between low, second, and high gears. Are you getting to the same rpm in low and high? Run it hard in high to see if you get the same bogging down.

Make sure none of the shift linkage is hitting any wires and shorting out.

Try 1 and 1/2 turns out instead of just 1.

The little dot on the crankshaft is 2 degrees BTDC. When timing, the dot aligns with the pointer on the timing case. The distributor rotor should be aligned with the #1 post on the cap in this location. As was mentioned, the vacuum can needs to work and be properly connected to the carb.

If this carb you describe is an 885 Holley then you will need to make sure the power valve actuator has no vacuum leakage in it's system. It is a complex vacuum circuit and it can leak easily. It has to be well sealed to work the piston and in turn, the power valve. If this is a 1901 then its circuit is less complex but it still needs to work correctly.

Accelerated over weekend 1st and 3rd do bog down at higher rpm. Could this be an issue with the power valve?
