Studs removed when removing Head Nuts
I am removing my head that was torqued repeatedly to 55# and stayed at 55# on repeated routine checks. When I removed it, 7 studs came out with the nut and only 7 nuts came off the studs. When I installed the studs 9,000 miles (2 Year) ago I did not use any sealant, just anti seize. I will be changing heads to a Snyder's 6:1 and am wondering if this is a problem with the studs releasing before the head nut, or if it is not an issue as long as the nut torques down and stays at the desired torque value. Thanks for your help.

Re: Studs removed when removing Head Nuts
Happens often. Torque readings are the same. You can put thread locker on the block end of the studs if you would like

When removing a Head from the block... and the Stud comes out with the stud nut, I call that a Blessing. ;-)

Re: Studs removed when removing Head Nuts
Loctite retaining compound number 609 works good for an application like that, it's not as strong as a thread locker, but will stop the studs from corroding and leaking and help hold them in place when you remove the nuts.

Re: Studs removed when removing Head Nuts
I see loose studs as a problem. If the stud turns when you check the torque, the nut doesn't move on the stud. These two threads have different pitches. 55# torque on a nut that moves on the stud puts much more downwards pressure on the head than the stud moving in the coarser thread in the block does. I use a molybdenum anti seize on the tops of the studs and a sealant at the bottom where they go into the block. The nut moves when I retorque and the stud can be removed from the block without too much trouble.

Re: Studs removed when removing Head Nuts
A new set of studs and nuts are insignificant as far as cost goes. Replace them all. Wayne

Re: Studs removed when removing Head Nuts
I would remove the nuts from the studs and clean and reuse the studs as long as they don't have pulled threads or are rust pitted. Use sealant on any studs that enter coolant.
