issues with flathead running after engine warms up
I recently purchased a 1941 ford pickup with original flathead and drivetrain. I was having trouble with getting the engine to start so I replaced the points, condenser, but re-used the coil. The vehicle now starts almost immediately. The engine appears to keep fire. My new problem is...once the engine runs for 15 minutes or so, and once I start to feed it more throttle, it wants to quit. In fact if I give it any throttle, it will quit. Could it be fuel deliver? Is the timing need set? Does the points need adjusted? All input would be appreciated.

Sound fuel related but...
I know this seems like a sell... look at having your dizzy done by bubba or skip. Have your coil done by skip. And having your carb run through by a professional. Coil is really a must. May run well in the driveway but once you go for a trip it leaves you shoulder side. Best investment from a standpoint, granted your time and the cost of doing it. Plus chasing it. Both guys have my approval and wished earlier that I went that route. My thought anyway. |

It is safe to say that 99 percent of old coils either affect operation when hot, if they run the vehicle at all.

Tinker, Who is Skip? I'm new to the flathead world so I don't have the resources that most of you guys have. Could you please forward me information on sending a coil to him? The carburetor appears to be rebuilt, but I would gladly send that of as well.

When you say "coil condenser" do you mean the condenser or the coil or both?

Just a shot in the dark here......Is your gas cap vented or non-vented? It should be vented.Try warming up the car, remove the cap and take it for a spin.If your cap is non-vented,the fuel pump will create a vacuum in the tank and the carburetor will be starving for gas.

If it throws a yellow spark of the HT wire then its a Ing problem ,if its blue I would be looking at the carburettor or fuel delivery /pump .Ted

Re: issues with flathead running after engine warms up
I'll try to respond to several comments:
The condenser I replaced, was attached to the left side to the distributor. It is a seperate piece but apparently is required for the coil to operate properly. Fuel - I read previous post from others that would theorize it could be vapor locking/fuel related. I did triy exactly what is suggested below. I took the cap off completely and then tried to excelerate the throttle by giving more fuel. This provided me with the exact same result. The engine would die with hardly any added fuel. |

dfoster.....I had a similar problem and had the coil reworked by Skip with a new condenser. That was 3 years ago and it runs great still.

This is an odd one but worked for me/check tightness of wires to the resister under the dash/try a new condenser.

Re: issues with flathead running after engine warms up
Update:
I installed new coil, new condenser and a new resister tonight. Started up first try. Let it run for 15-20 minutes to build engine temperature. It appears to be corrected. Hit the throttle to accelerate the RPM's...it appears to take it OK. Timing might need to be adjusted slightly but otherwise I think It's correct. It could have been the resister but I replaced all 3 items. Thanks again for all the feedback. It was certainly helpful. |
