crank slinger?????????
im getting ready to put the crank back into a 51 merc engine. ive noticed that it doesnt have the front slinger on it. (the slinger that goes on next to the crankshaft gear) is this supposed to be on there? i have one on another motor but cant figure out how it goes on, or how to get it off. help! thanks.

Re: crank slinger?????????
Slips on in front of the gear with the flange facing out. The spiral sleeve goes on next.

Re: crank slinger?????????
Little tapping, little prying, little penetrating oil.
Or use a gear puller to pull the gear. (the slinger will come off with it) |

Re: crank slinger?????????
ok, so just to make sure, 1. get the dowel pin out, 2. get the spiral off somehow, 3. pull slinger.

Re: crank slinger?????????
The factory manual says to pull the pulley spacer, & gear at the same time. They used a special puller to do this but I have a non-factory type puller that works.

Re: crank slinger?????????
The Merc overhaul manual shows a figure with them tapping it back on using another special tool. A piece of pipe the right diameter & length would work OK.

Re: crank slinger?????????
back at it with a new gear, slinger and spiral spacer. the gear went on fairly easy, slinger was no problem either. i need some advice on the spiral spacer. it fits really tight. any tips? we boiled it and still a no go. its been a lot of work to get it barely on. the spacer is new from macs.

Re: crank slinger?????????
I lightly heated my last on and slipped it on? Maybe not the right way but it worked.

Re: crank slinger?????????
It's a tight fit. Find a piece of pipe theat will slip over the crank snout and pound it on. You do have it aligned with the keyway I hope.

Re: crank slinger?????????
It's been awhile since I did this, but I think you can use the old gear to drive on the spiral seal sleeve, put the sleeve on, then the old gear, then a piece of pipe against the old gear and tap it on. heat up the spiral sleeve first, have everything ready to go before the sleeve cools down. make sense?
