Dual exhaust on right hand drive 1940 pickup
Would anyone have a photo of their manifold/headers running dual exhaust on a right hand drive 37-41? Have tried searching old threads but couldn't see any pictures.
I don't have my pickup here but remembered today I had these manifolds from when my motor was in a stationary fire pump. Hoping I might be able to modify the rhs to be able to run the front pipe past the steering box and starter. Any photos or help appreciated. |

Thinking they might be a bit hard to find too, and maybe more expensive than working with what I have. I'm keen to see a photo of how others have run their front pipes to see where they track through all the clutter.

I have to say it. Those are unusual looking manifolds. I imagine they are cast iron, but maybe not. If you can't find the Pilot manifolds, get some nickel rod, a bucket of sand, some charcoal, insulated blankets, and have at it. If they are steel tube, you're home free. They look like you could make them into something cool!

On all the 39 Fords I put duals on over the past 65 years I
usd a BIG hole saw the size of the height of the oval opening and elongated the hole towards the engine. G.M.

I'm not sure if these manifolds are the original parts for the stationary fire pump but they look well made and might be a shortcut to success for me as they're welded steel pipe. |

Re: Dual exhaust on right hand drive 1940 pickup
Hey Nathanmac,
I was doing this exact thing on my RHD '37 today. Finished the RHS today and half finished the LHS. I used an 8BA manifold on the RHS that has the exhaust outlet at the rear of the manifold and allows the exhaust pipe to avoid the steering box and starter. The pipe leaves the 8BA manifold and drops at fairly tight angle down through the elongated hole in the diagonal chassis member directly behind the steering box, and away to the rear. I am working in Tauranga tomorrow but should be able to do some pictures tomorrow night. |

How close to the starter does it run - any heat shields required around it or the master cylinder? Much appreciated. |

No heat shields required as it clears the starter and steering box by plenty.
Not sure about the master cylinder as my '37 is still running cable brakes. |

Ahh true. Thanks, look forward to the photos when they come through, will start searching for the right manifold.

Re: Dual exhaust on right hand drive 1940 pickup
Hey Nathan,
Here is my amateur attempt at the RHS of a RHD dual exhaust. I have only shown the RHS as the LHS is straight forward with no obstructions to talk about. This was only done yesterday so has not been tidied up as yet. I have brought the pipe as far to the outside of the elongated chassis hole as practical so as to give the brake pedal arm as much travel as possible. If the brake pedal arm was to travel down far enough to hit the pipe then there would be a serious issue with the brake adjustment and would require attention. I plan on just blanking off the front end of the 8BA manifold where I think the automatic choke sensor would have been. Last edited by FlatheadEric; 03-30-2021 at 12:50 AM. |

Outstanding, thanks Eric. That's exactly what I needed to see. Now on the hunt for one of those manifolds...
Much appreciated. |
