Re: Original Fan Belts...NOS
These two original ones were in a box of Model A parts I bought for $40 a couple of years ago . The top red one is a newer repro; the bottom two are Ford Model A era originals with the correct part number and Ford script (they are not for sale).
There was a nice used one for sale on FordBarn earlier this year for $350 that sold very quickly: https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=285739 Brad in Maryland |

Re: Original Fan Belts...NOS
Yes, both of those original belts sold right away! The first original one I bought was at Hershey probably 15+ years ago. I paid $600. It was not NOS.
I have seen NOS brown fan belts sold for $1000 each. |

I'm guessing fine point judging is involved in that price structure?

$1,000? Hmm, fill the gas tank...or buy a fan belt??? Tough choices living in California.

I have sold several NOS ones for $800-1000 in the last few years.

Well, I think we all have out interests No one is pulling your money out of your pocket. It is no different than buying the great golf club that you have wanted. It is the pursuit of excellence that some people choose to achieve. To some, that original fan belt is just like the candle on top of the birthday cake. All of us decide to what level we want to restore our cars, and what we individually want to do. To many, that is exactly how we wanted to spend our money.

Re: Original Fan Belts...NOS
So I go out cruising to show off my new $1000 fan belt and it snaps and gets flung into the ditch somewhere.
Can I glue it back together and still pass muster? |

You could, but remember, the moment you install it and start the engine it is no longer New Old Stock! It's just another 90 year old used belt! |

Re: Original Fan Belts...NOS
I have a NOS Thermoid V-1 belt in original packaging. The Coupon on the back says "not good after January 1943". Hard to see in photo , but fits Model A and B. I will sell this if anyone is interested.

Sounds like I should go into the red belt business.

Re: Original Fan Belts...NOS
I was told years ago by some old timers that if you bought a NOS fan belt at Hershey you had to wear it around your neck for the rest of the day as a trophy.

To begin with, it is quite evident y'all have no idea what you are discussing. To begin with, it is a needed item if you plan to [U]authentically[U] restore your Model-A. Making fun of someone else for desiring to achieve a higher level of correctness is pretty sad. It also is worth mentioning that original fan belts are manufactured from natural rubber -and not synthetic, -so while the cloth covering can deteriorate with usage, it is very unlikely that the natural rubber will "snap". It is a used 90 year old fan belt that will bring the same value as NOS. The only place where a 'non-use' belt would be preferred would be in a static display such as a era parts room. For fine-point adjudication, ..or for a vehicle depicting a certain time after factory assembly, the belt needs to appear as being used but not worn. Again, this is all about perspective and goals. |

Re: Original Fan Belts...NOS
Thanks Brent.
If I spend my Covid unemployment pay cheque (fortnightly of course) on a $1000 fan belt and my spirits are raised considerably, and I go around the next corner of Hershey and there is one for $5 dollars... Well, what do I think then? |
