97 is a mostly 2 lane improved wide lanes, high speed cars and trucks use it 55 to 75 MPH..it will get you to eastern Washington from northern Calif..I-5 is 4 lane all the way but closures I not aware, look on ODOT web site..might want to try old 99 where you can or even 101 on coast.

You can get all the way from Sebastopol to Puyallup without driving on a freeway. I've done it. Where in CA are you, Tom?

Tom, there are two freeways that skirt P-town east and west. If you log into Tripcheck.com as you near Salem you can get an idea if either has a problem. Try not to get out of Portland going north any time after 1:00. Traffic is awful from 1-7 on weekdays, not so bad on Sundays.

Tom south of Tacoma around Joint Base Lewis McCord where highway 512 connects to I-5 is always a mess during the morning and evening commute. Try to time it so you avoid the commute hours.

Simply, there are no closures on I5 right now in the Portland area. 700rpm offers good advice on I205.
