Hand Brake Lever - front of shift lever?

The attached picture shows two designs of the A-2795 sector for the hand brake lever installed in front of the shift lever.

When was each design used? Were there different designs of A-2786 pawls used?

I don't fined any information in the RGJS.

I never knew there were 2 version of the front brake ratchet. It appears the two ratchets have the same outline. I have several of the ratchets and I can check what kind they are. However, I don't know what the ratchet's came from, as all four of my A's which use the ratchet (28's and first half 29's) were missing a lot of parts including the emergency brake parts. I suspect maybe the 4 tooth ratchet may have bee an early version and then Ford decided the brake needed another tooth. It is also possible that when Ford went to the push button handle they made the 4 to 5 or 5 to 4 ratchet, but I have no idea, sorry. I know this is much help, but until you posted the pictures in this string, I thought all pawl's were the same. It looks like model A vendors sell the 5 tooth ratchet, so that must be the most common, you would think.

Have you checked with Steve Plucker, as he has done a lot of research of a lot of parts.

Neil,

I do remember noting the difference of the number of the teeth.
It could be the change from the "squeeze" to the "button" and the shape change
of the pawl so it didn't run into the shift handle. OR the handle laid too far forward?
I just can't remember...

I checked the 3 I have and all are 5 tooth. I believe at least one came off of a push button emergency brake.

ahha! my march 29 with push button lever has 5 teeth according to a pic I took when I pulled the engine. It has the handbrake style as seen above above the 4 tooth sector tho...

Now heres what I know:
The engine is not original to the truck - mid 31 engine in a March 29 truck so who knows what the trans is (handbrake is in front of the shifter)

the handbrake had a cut thru the square part opposite of the bolt for some reason. It was purposely cut with a chunk taken out... Why? no idea...

I checked five hand brake levers (front of shift lever). They were all the push button lever (started 1929 per RGJS). All five have the five tooth A-2795 sector.

So, I am guessing that the 4 tooth sector was the earlier design. I don't have any squeeze style levers to check. So, I don't know if the squeeze style levers came with both designs of sectors.

Ford archives is your best bet.

Go to the MAFFI site and type in the part number...there you will see a series of dates that corresponmd to the drawings made of the changes...Part Releases good source also.

Page 483 ( August ) of the Service Bulletins - though it just says "finer teeth" and does not specify 4 vs 5 teeth...
