Question about 1930 Model A PU Truck with missing grease fittings

I inherited two Model A's, one of which is a 1930 Pickup Truck. Dad was in his 90's and relied on third parties or an employee of his farm to do maintenance on his old cars.


I should have checked the pickup when it arrived here. It was not operable but I was able to get it running. I went to lubricate it today, after watching a video on the numerous items to grease or lubricate.


There are no grease fittings of any kind on the spring shackles but I can see the holes where the fittings should be (and they are dry as a bone).

Is there any reason these items would have no grease fitting? Thank you.

Some of the fittings are press-in, they like to fall out.

I wondered if they had fallen out over time. It looked like someone tried to grease the spring shackles as there was dried grease in each hole (but it would have been a long time ago).

Something else regarding springs: hang the wheels by jack stands under the frame and squirt creeping oil or Teflon in between the leaves. You can use a tapered object to help open the leaves wider if you wish.

I use a small socket to drive the zerks into place. This puts the driving force around the shoulder of the zerk instead of hammering against the nipple distorting it.

I bought my zerks from Bratton’s, and they are a very tight fit. I would recommend using a socket that you don’t mind throwing away (or using only on zerk insertion) because the heavy pounding will likely distort the socket.

When you order the zerks, vendors sell a tool for driving them in. There are two types of drivers and zerks available Modern Style or Original Style. I prefer the modern as I find them easier to grease. The drivers are well worth it. They cost less than $3.00.
