Please Help Identify Ford Steering Wheel
We need help identifying the steering wheel in this photo. My friend is in the process of recreating the 1947 version of Jack Calori’s SCTA record breaking ‘29 Roadster. So far we have not been able to find any good photos of the interior taken in 1947. My theory is that Jack always had the tonneau cover on the car so nobody was able to get a photo of the dash. When we asked Jack about the steering wheel he thought it had been a ‘40 Ford wheel.
This week I found a 1947 photo of Jack’s roadster that I had never seen before. When I zoom in on it I can see the steering wheel, it’s not that clear but it is definitely not a ’40 Ford wheel, the center section is too big. Anybody want to take a guess as to what it came out of? Appreciate the help, Jerry |

Re: Please Help Identify Ford Steering Wheel
I cannot see enough detail, but there are several Ford plain button/no horn ring center caps that fit the basic '42-48 wheel hub. They are all somewhat scarce because they came only on the low-line cars. Can that picture be sharpened at all somehow?? I have exactly one of those, and if I can find it and it's the right one it belongs right there...

Re: Please Help Identify Ford Steering Wheel
Calori WOULD have to use what is undoubtedly the least common version of the wheel...

Thanks for solving the mystery. You win a ride in Billy's Calori Roadster clone. I have never seen a '42 Merc wheel before, its beautiful. I looked up '42 Mercury production, this is not going to be an easy wheel to find. Mercury production for the short 1942 model year totaled only 22,772 units (24,704 worldwide). That's because the government had restricted auto production throughout the model year, which lasted only from October 3, 1941, to February 10, 1942. After that, U.S. civilian output was halted as American auto plants were converted to the exclusive production of war material. |

Re: Please Help Identify Ford Steering Wheel
hotrodsurplus I came across your Mercury Horn Ring photo on this thread. One note, I have the same horn ring on a 1946 Mercury Woodie; the only difference being where your right side is an inverted "Mercury" mine is showing the wording "Eight" completing the "Mercury Eight" theme of the vehicle. Unfortunately, my horn ring is broken and am in search of a replacement. I would venture a guess that mine is from 1941 old factory stock that was placed on the 1946 Mercury as new. If anyone out there has a similar horn ring they wish to sell, please contact me. New to this site so thank you.

Re: Please Help Identify Ford Steering Wheel
The cool horn ring is from a Monarch. It has the lion in the center. There was one on e-Bay the other day.

Re: Please Help Identify Ford Steering Wheel
The wheel could be '42-'48 Mercury, as they all had the stainless wrap on the spokes.
The horn button I don't recognize. |
